Middle Harbour Jewie

Hi raiders,

Went out for a shot at a low tide jewie.

Last night i finally ditched the mono and "went over to the braid side".

Went to a kingie spot but not much happening - only one hit and miss.

Bumped into a couple of raiders there then we moved on.

I stuck to the plan and hit my jewie spot and right on low tide this little fella hit a big squid strip. The braid was excellent and i am converted. He put up a good fight for only about 62cm.

Been getting lots of jews this size and a bit bigger but were is my jewie over 10kg :1badmood:

Think hes hanging at Long Reef so Friday weather permitting i am gonna try and hunt him down.

Cheers all.

Good result Mike. Good to see to another jew come out of Middle Harbour. I've got an idea that it might be worthwhile doing a full day session in Middle Harbour on whole squid bait for an all or nothing. I don't think there will be too many pickers around right now.

Cheers

Yup you might be right on that.

Pickers are dropping off very quickly.

Water temp just 19.

I was actually jigging my rod when this fella hit. I have caught a few doing this recently.

Cheers

Good one Zenman

What size bait and hooks are you using?

Keep it up the bigguns are around.

An hour per pound as the wise ones say!

Cheers

inhlanzi

It was a fresh frozen squid strip about 120mm long. This rig had a single 5o hook.

He wolfed it down and was gut hooked. I have been jigging baits like this with success and these little fellas have been smashing the bait.

Had some bigger baits like mullet and whole squid but the smaller ones love the strips.

Going to try Friday high tide at Long Reef weather permitting.

Cheers

At my spot there were not many pickers yesterday surprisingly. Pinkies were not around.

Whilst fishing your spot earlier the raiders next to me took a phone call from ya Jase.

Got one hit and miss there but mate i was ready and loaded with 60lb braid this time.

Man i wasted 3 good squid at that spot last sunday on

bream/pinkies/leatheries the terrible trio of pickers!!

Then turned one southern (.5kg) into 4 kings at that spot.

stripped it up into about ten baits and used single 5/0 hook rig.

still got pecked to pieces though.

Have you connected leader to your braid using the albright knot?

Cheers mate

Still struggling with my knots and braid.

I connected braid to swivel with the two loops then 6 twist around line then another 6 twists over the first.

Tested it at home and seemed strong enough. Mono shock leader of 40lb Jinkai.

When next fishing with a buddy who knows what hes doing with braid i am up for a lesson.

Mate i have had a good year on jewies, caught heaps and a very bad year on kingies. Caught a few small ones and totally smoked on bigger ones. Hope the braid puts me in with a chance.

Bring on a Long Reef 20lber. If not hope to get a few runs on sharks so can test my braid knots.

Cheers mate.

Nice fish there Mike... I like the look of the Middle Harbour Jews. They look much more different to the ones caught in the River or off the beaches. There are pickers in Port Jackson just to let you guys know... the worst one's of all... Leatherjackets. Caught one of these annoyances on a live yeelowtail which had been pinned twice using 6 O hooks, would you believe it. The yakka had been in the water for 2mins :mad3:

Yeah the season is certainly changing when the jackets turn up.

A friend of mine who lives on the Hawksbury says the jews are feeding on the surface or just below smashing mullet.

I'll bet you there are some monsters in that system now with mullet around in big numbers.

Cheers

Thanks Ceph and Robbielites.

Mate i dont know why i was so paranoid about braid knots.

I guess i am a creature of habit.

Looks doable to me i will just have to do some practice and get em down to the point that i am confident.

Hope to test em out Friday night.

Looks fishy out there tonite. Wind is dropping off and tide is rising with the failing light.

Someones gotta get a big jew in the next few days.

Cheers

Oh I hope so :)

I was meant to go out on the Hawks tonight with some freinds, but work got in the way :mad3:

Hoping for a call around 7 or 8 rubbing it in :)

As for the braid.... Remember lots of twists because it is so skinny :)

I can feel the pressure dropping too. There is a good chance that a big bait will be smashed in the River if it's deployed thier in the next couple. I would like to get out there but the swell is up and it'll make rounding West Head a little fury.
