Rainjackets

hello everyone.

as we all know the weather can sometimes be far from good and we have to make do with whatever is thrown our way.

in an effort to do this in the most comfort possible i wanted to get a good rainjacket. i say this because i've worn through a few windcheaters and once the waterproofing comes off them they're next to useless in rain.

so . . . does anyone know of any good rainjackets that are comfy and 100% waterproof?

thanks in advance

Ooh this is good .. I'm looking for one too ..

I have seen some sum $100 at fishing tackle stores which are 'waterproof jackets'.

They are PVC jobs so water should not get through ?

Who has a driz-a-bone ?? How well do they work ?

G'day Guys

The PVC ones are good for water proofing but, they are stiff and do not breath. I have an oilskin coat as well and it is pretty much the same. Good if you are not doing too much but they will eventually get water in and you will sweat.

Basically spend the money and get something decent which breathes. There are lots of good jackets about at witworths etc. I think you can browse them on the net. It is really a choice of how much you want to spend and do you want to get it fishy :1prop:

Cheers,

Brian

Money is not an issue LOL

When u are going to be standing in the rain for hours (done that in summer, not yet in winter) you need all the help you can get ..

What do the boaties use to keep themselves dry ?

Visit a Paddy Pallins shop and check out the best gear.

I have a Berghaus mountaineering jacket that I have owned for a long time. It is waterproof, windproof and unable to be ripped (Gore-tex). It has pockets in all the right places and it weighs nothing.

There are Mountain Hardwear has some good jackets too - designed by a fly fisho.

These jackets are very expensive but last a long time.

Columbia titanium series jackets are the most comfy and dry one I have found. Fishing for 8 hours a day in comps with pissing down rain it's essential to have good clothes. They have a great bib and brace pants as well. You can sit on your wet seats and NO water gets in even on the seems.

Price they are expensive tho at $699rrp. They have a inner jacket to keep warm that can be zipped out in summer to. I have even worn the outer jacket up in Cape York in 30 degree days when moving offshore from spot to spot and when those tropical storms roll threw.

My last one lasted almost 3 years and then the zip gave up the ghost but thats pretty good considering the amount it's worn and hardly ever got washed. My 2008 version is even better than the old one. Better seals, zips and pull downs to make it tighter around the face and neck which is a must for the Skeeter factor!

Befriend a Postie , our rain gear is up there with the best !!!!

Cheers ,

haha .. or roll one ...

the drizabone is looking good .. i don't think i would be sweating too much in the rain and in winter so the lack of breathing factor might not be too much of an issue ..

I have a drizabone - I love it. Look after it (ie. regular treatment) and it'll last forever. No zip to worry about.

Only snag is that if you went in the drink with it, it would get very heavy.

I have a Driz-a-bone (not the oil down overcoat but a more modern zip up jacket) and have a center console. I also dont let the rain stop a fishing trip.

We came screaming into a grey curtain of rain from out wide about 2 months ago and I was sitting on the front bench seat - water pooled in the jacket but I was dry inside (wet everywhere else!)

Got it for Chrissy so not sure how much they are but I highly recommend the brand.

This is the kind of jacket that really does it all, on hot days I wear it to protect me from the sun (fair skin), when its raining I am dry, etc... Also cuts the wind and keeps you warm on those freezing cold mornings although you need something woolen if it is really cold...

Cheers

I've got what i thought was a reasonable rain jacket till i spent a week away soaked thru every day.

As long as it's not to windy, never under estimate the effectiveness of the cheap plastic poncho.

Makes for a great backup when you find out your jacket aint that good.

I would recommend either the Musto or Pelagic brand offshore Hurricane or the 100% waterproof Tempest jackets and pants. Good lightweight equipment made for fishing. Order from the US - the current USD/AUSD exchange rate makes it easy on the pocket for great gear. You can check them out on-line from the large Amercian tackle stores. Takes about a week to arrive.

Cheers,

Rabs.

G'day there Nathan, i will recommend one that is very light weight, and is waterproof to 2000mtrs ,it has a hood and everything attached, and also has a pouch in the front of it which in turn stores away in itself, you simply push the jacket from the inside through the little pocket and neatly becomes as small as a little cushion. The jacket is made from the company" Ridgeline ", from New Zealand. I use mine for both Bowhunting and fishing, if none of your fishing outlets have these in stock then you may have to visit an outdoors place or an Archery outlet like Benson's Archery at Granville, Hoddywell Archery at Smithfield, or Abby Archery at Castle Hill. They retail for about 70 bucks, anyway check them out, and Best of all they are breathable. Product Name is Fly Weight Jacket from Ridgeline.Cheers and all the best with your search from Gav.

You can get them for $30 at Bankstown Gun Shop. Looks good enough to keep you warm and lightweight too.

I prefer a full length zip, if I get hot I can open it right up. I don't mind getting wet, so long as I am warm. I don't have anything special, as it only needs to keep me warm for a few hours. I always carry spare jumper/jackets in the boat and 4wd.
