Norther Beaches, Beach/rock Fishing

Hi All,

New to beach/rock fishing.. just picked up some outfits over the weekend to start using..

Tried the 12 footer at Narra Beach, just south of the entrance to the lake.. in what seemed to look like a nice fish gutter.. and got consistently mauled by little sand crabs... caught a couple which confirmed my theory...

Just wondering if anyone fishes the northern beaches regularly? Curl Curl, Dee Why, Narra, etc etc

Any pointers? beaches that seem to produce the better fish?

G'day,

All the beaches you mentioned are good and have their moments.

I would throw in Long reef also as it doesnt get so crowded.

I dont use anything too fancy.

Cheap 13 ft rod with a shimano baitrunner or something similar is enough.

I fish 10kg main with a 15kg trace about 1m long.

This moon cycle i am gonna try my new outfit. Its the same but i will give the braid a go on the beach.

Last year at LR had a great time catching sharks. When the salmon were on so were the sharks.

My mate beached one big whaler and through that period several of us caught a few.

These baits were aimed at jews.

Good fun and a great way to test you outfit.

PS we let all sharks go and only kept one nice gummy shark last year.

Cheers

Do you usually just bait up? or have you tried flicking some metals about too?

Same, nothing fancy here, a 12 footer with a 5000 size spinning reel 2 spools, one with 15lb braid and the other 20lb braid.

My first ever beach session yesterday, was using the 15lb w. 20lb mono leader, might up that to 30lb, just need to get some first!

Any times in particular been more productive for you? I tried the out going from about 3pm to 6:30sih (just when it hit low) then it got a bit too dark, didn't have the torch with me.. so called it quits..

I bet the action was just just around the corner at the turn of the tide..

I just use bait on the beach.

Met a guy once down there who was flicking big soft plastics. He didnt get anything that night but he claimed to have got the odd jew that way.

I usually get there late arvo and fish into the night. I really only fish the beach up to a high tide.

I love the high tide when it falls within a few hours of sunset. Later this week the tide looks good for a beach fish.

You gotta learn to read the beach and find a nice gutter etc. I am not a very good beach fisher but i enjoy it.

I got lucky once and pulled in a nice jewie. Enough to keep me coming back looking for a bigger one.

I have seen lots of jews get caught whilst fishing the beach so i know people catch them. Mate i get excited when even a complete stranger catches one. Its also an opportunity to see what they have done to land one.

Cheers.

Hi AJ,

I used to chase Jews or tailor/salmon/flathead/bream or whiting off the beach but not so much now that i've got a boat.

Zenman's on the money. I love the run up to the high also and have seen jews caught around me whilst whiting fishing! Biggest on a humble frozen pillie on ganged hooks, not fair really but still great to see.

I found some beaches have more crabs than others. Narra beach does seem to have more sand crabs than most. That spot you fished is very good (especially now after the rain) and gets busy in summer, but a soft fish bait like a pillie will get mauled quickly by crabs unless you fish with a light weight so it's not anchored to the bottom.

Here's a little summary from my experience -

Narrabeen - Great whiting beach in summer - i use nippers, but worms probably better. Best early morning or night. Great for Jew with sturdy baits like mullet and squid.

Dee Why/Longy - Great for tailor, salmon, sharks, jew, bream, flatties. Pillies, slab fish baits.

Curly off the sthn pool for tailor (keep the rig light)

Warriewood - tailor, flathead

Newport - Jews

I fish a threadline 8lb mono straight to a long shank hook with a small ball sinker for whiting, 12lb mono threadline for tailor, salmon, bream, flathead and an alvey 20lb mono for jew.

Have thought about braid but often you hit weed on these beaches and the thought of trying to untangle a braid/weed bundle of crap just scares me.

Basically if you find a good deep gutter on any of the nthn beaches, have good fresh bait and fish around the high from arvo to night you will eventually score.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Appreciate the knowledge guys...

Same.. I have a boat and don;t do a lot of beach fishing, that said, I have never caught a fish from the beach .. plenty of Sand Crabs though... and need to conquer the beach too...

I think you've given me plenty of pointers and set me in the right direction...

now I need to find good gutters (which Is a bit of an art in itself) and I need to practice casting to get the right sort of distance....

In time with patience and persistence (and a lil help with the wealth of knowledge provided) i'm sure i'll land a few...

might even catch u up there on the beaches some time.. :biggrin2:
