humesy
Howdy, I have been wondering about Hawkesbury squid. Is it a particular species of squid that costs $30 a kilo. I had a guy at the fish markets explain to me that Hawkesbury squid is diffinitely superior in taste compared to harbour squid or botany bay squid. Jewgaffer told me the other day they are an arrow squid and I have seen Goulds squid refered to. Do these high falutin' squid come into pittwater and will I know if I get one? Tony Soprano
The $30/ kilo from the antique shop are definitely arrows as I've used them before... As for if you can get them in Pittwater, I know you can but they are nowhere near as common as the southerns.. If you get one its easy to tell which is which by the length of the wings down the side of the body, and generally I find the arrows aren't as thick in the body for their size as the southerns. jewgaffer
Hi Andrew, Hi Tony. All arrow squid are Gould's squid. The squid we had to buy that day Andrew, and Tony the time we fished up there with Stevie Roosterman, were local trawler caught Hawkesbury arrow squid. The south coast arrow squid you can buy at a much cheaper price are Gould's squid caught from that particular area, and still arrow squid. There is something in the benefit of using local Hawkesbury arrows on the Hawkesbury jew that must be because of the area, I think. The colour is right when they are fresh and they seem to catch jewfish more often than the others do. Local jewfishermen have a hang up about using out of area arrows if local arrows are unavailable. Big calamari green eye local or out of area are all the same I think and fresh cuttlefish heads and skinned strips work on the Hawkesbury also. I rang Kiwi Dan to ask if he caught arrows among the green eye when he had a good day on the squid at the Spit one time and he said they were all green eye calamari squid and they occasionally see arrows (gould's) caught at the spit. We catch more calomari than arrows in the Hacking, but only arrows around CC bridge pylons. humesy
G'day gents, I think I have caught more arrows at the spit than green eyes but I never knew they were Gould squid. Seems like the arrows like the bridges. Its also interesting that they were $30/kilo at the fish markets as well as at the antique shop.
