Regards, Daniel Hi Daniel trout will definately take a lure or fly that causes a "wake", i come from the uk and have been a fly fisherman for many years and we used to use a fly called a "muddler" this consisted of a big bulbous head made from clipped deer hair that floats right on the surface and when stripped back created the wake i mentioned earlier if trout are on the surface they will hammer this type of lure/fly, fantastic visual fishing you just have to vary the retrieve to see how hungry/ lazy the trout are on any particular day, anything from 6 inch pulls to 1 meter hope this helps tight lines steve
rizzo Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 After spending the day up there yesterday and seeing the ripples from fish rising to the surface, i was wondering if trout on poppers in an option and has anyone tried it there? Regards, Daniel Hi Daniel i think it will work on trout cause all those snazzy expensive japanese lures both top water and divers were specially designed to lure trout and other lure crunching species in impoundments in japan. after all these years i've wondered the same thing but never really bothered to try it out i'm gunna try it now that you've mentioned it and i have the right lure for it aswell my ever faithful Jackson T-Pivot top water lure black gold in colour with orange belly i think it will work just fine just have to see on next outing and will keep raiders posted on this subject Cheers Rizzo
dean Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 I Haven't tried poppers on trout yet, there's no reason why they wouldn't work. On a recent trip fishing the rivers in the Oberon area i had a wayward cast land in a deep pool, the belly in the line managed to hook onto a small branch that i either didn't see or thought was well out of my casting range. While i was trying to flick the line of the branch, to my suprise a nice brown smashed the lure of the surface. If the trout are rising there's no reason why poppers wouldn't work. Cheers Dean
Kruzenvax Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 I've caught a good number of trout from Lyell (shore based)... Caught on all sorts of lures - minnows, spinners, tassie devils, sp's... but none on poppers, which I tried couple of times. And watching this trout rishing here and there and not taking surface lures makes my hands itch. This season will be trying popers when its dark (and the moon is on).
