allen glover
not much to report Took a newbie out wide just to scare the pants off him seas were OK and as he was used to fishing the north sea I couldnt raise an eyebrow so I went marlin trolling to bore him into stupidity. that worked Plenty of slimeys in 40m so worked them for a while for no luck so pushed wider to either find more bait or fish the BB fad. At the fad it was like pitt st and the fish were shut down tighter than a pub at christmas. So left the marlin spread out and headed north to try the terrigal traps. Talking to DJMAC and he was raising a few at the terrigal fad so made a detour to find it just as busy as BB. Temps were up and the odd fish being pulled so we tried but still no luck. Got a call from May Be NOT of some kingie action down at BB wide again so back I go and bump into some traps just short of the mark.Trolled my secret lure past and the newbie finds himself getting stretched by his first dollie. a decent fish for an early season dollie and we work the trap for a few more before it shuts down. start hunting out a few more traps and end up back at a now deserted fisheries FAD. first pass of the secret lure and a lovely 80 cm+ dollie leaps full out of the water in pursuit and the abu6500 starts screaming. In the stiff breeze I suddely find the fad between me and the fish but after a bit of franticly hurried boating Im thankfully reaching for the gaff and handing the newbie the rod( I aint gonna trust him to gaff this bugger) off it goes again and IM now telling him how to work a decent fish ( lift and drop/wind NOOO not that quick!!) well he finally gets it boat side and I sink the gaff in to the head for a neat score. few more passes and a few more smaller though still respectable dollies fall. packed it up and headed home after they shut down. score prolly 10 dollies, 4 kept, one happy newbie, and another marlin day saved by the golden rockets. p.s pic suffers form photographic shrinkage and the fish looks tiny but trust me it was a pretty decent FAD dollie Edited January 22, 2005 by allen glover

Guest Jocool
Great report AG. How far out are these FADS? Once I get the console in my boat, and fit a few things to it, are they accessible to me? By the way, my underflloor fuel tank holds about 70 Lt. djmac
ill just add my report to Allen's I headed out and saw Allen getting livies, went and had a quick chat and he was going wide which was my plan anyway. We got just outside the heads and had some nice temp so we trolled out. trolled out to the sydney fad and every man and his dog was there. trolled past for no hits so decided to go to terrigal fad got there and everyone was hooking up on some small juvenile dollies they werent hitting lures but pilchard, prawn squid they were eating. picked up a few here and gave allen a buzz to come down as he had livies. we got 5 or 6 but not much size in them so put them back for another day. the call that we were getting some turned into a bad call (my bad allen!) and we decided to move on was going to head to the shelf, but i thought we would go for a troll around bb wide as we found some nice spots of 23 deg water but no bloody bait then decided to check a few fish traps got there and we made a turn past on of the traps the lumo sprocket on the long rigger gets smashed but i thought ahh shit ive hooked the trap. so i backed off the engine but it wasnt the trap at all. as i backed off the fish dropped the lure it was pretty solid though, the 24kg gear was singing a bit. got the spread back up and went past another trap bang the short rigger and short corner both get absolutely smashed now 2 on board and a full spread of lures, this creates chaos. my fish was a smaller model around 2-3kgs so i got it in pretty quick on 15kg gear. as i rushed to help dad get his fish away from the trap i went to move the boat and dropped my fish on the bottom of the boat it was still pretty green and went nuts the 2 hook rig on the lure, one hook in the fish and now one hook in dads foot almost out the otherside. consequently we lost this fish. was a est 20kg specimen so anyway this kind of cut the day a bit shorter. i had to cut the trace but the hook was too big to cut the barb off so the hook had to stay. strapped his foot and we had a couple more passes before heading back to get it out. we relased a few more a couple close to 5,6kgs im not much of a fish eater but i dont mind the occasional dollie, took a smallish one back for a feed. any bigger and they dont fit on the barbie! awesome day out, cheers to allen for keeping in contact with me. it was good being not the lone sole out there as usual. we got back took the boat home, dad went to hosp got the hooked removed and 4 stitches. so hes a bit sore at the moment, my fault really but one of those things im just glad it wasnt one of the hooks on the bigger lures. would have been way worse heres the pic of the small one we kept. all i can say is get out there and get into some fun for the whole family, just keep an eye on the conditions if you arent used to going out that far, or talk myself or others on 94 im always out there. Cheers, Col

Guest bluecod
djmac, nothing worse than a beserk fish with hooks near its gob - throw a towel over its eyes next time - as soon as they're covered by a towel the dollies just lie there, quiet as can be. works when you're taking the hooks out as well. Outnumbered
Q: How can you tell when you have a real fisho on board? A: when he's got a bloody big hook through his foot but wants to make another couple of passes before heading in to get it removed. BTW nice fish but did you get any pics of the foot? djmac
haha yeah i kinda was trying to do 1000 things at once and consequently threw the fish down and theres not much room with a 3-4kg dollie in the back flapping around in a 5.2m centrecab with 2 ppl standing there next time i might take the hooks out first or at least put it in the fishbox!! seems everytime we go fishing theres always some drama! haha nah i should have taken a photo of the hook, it was a solid hookup, he definetly wasnt getting away! the doctors at the hospital took a photo of it as they said they had never seen a hook that big. This was only one of the little lures, i would have hate to have seen what they said if it was the hooks on the 13' lumo
quintrex
Hi Joe, The FAD east of Manly is much closer than 10 miles. NSW Fisheries site has the GPS co-ordinates for all Sydney FADs. Cheers. Peter

REKLESS
Just reading about the hooks in your old mans feet brings back a few very horrible memories,With dollies I just do not trust the things and if I cant get the hooks out easily and the thing is going nuts the whole lot goes in the tub ,disconnect the trace and wait till the right moment before getting the things out safely.
