Brocky0984 Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Hi All Thinking seriously of purchasing a little savage runabout. It has a 35 HP Johnson on the the back (1980) model. Can any of you suggest a decent mechanic that would be able to give the engine a once over so that I dont purchase a lemon straight off. The engine seems good but I just dont have the experience to make a valued decision at this stage of my boating career. I live in Narrabeen Sydney and the boat is currently at East Hills. Cheers
Dorado 2 Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Mate to be honest that outboard is 28 years old I think you would be lucky if you find a mechanic to touch it cause at that age outboards spell trouble for them and the customer just keeps on bringing it back cause it ain't right and becomes a never ending story. Hope I'm wrong but I know a couple of mechanics that just won't touch a motor that old Cheers

BaysideMarine Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Nothing wrong with a 28 yr old outboard brocky. You will find that most large dealers wont touch it because it represents too much work for them. Look for a smaller repairer and you should be fine. I feel like I am almost overcharging when doing a late model service as there is so little to do and everything unbolts easily. Find the right guy with the right attitude and you will be fine. Cheers
a boat Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Hi Brocky, no problem with the age of the Johno if it has been maintained and the price is right. We have many 1970's Johnson and Evinrudes still happily running around and the engine you are looking at is one of the most bullet proof engines made. If we were looking at trading such an engine, I would want to see that it has had the head gasket replaced at least once in is life, I would check the compression, the gearbox oil and the engine mounts. Also go for a hard run with it in the water and if it runs fine and you like the boat and the price do not lose any sleep just becasue it happens to be a 1980 model. If you have any questions feel free to ask, Cheers, Huey.
