Just need some advice.

Im looking to buy an allrounder rod +reel combo that can handle both kingies and YFT.

I would be mostly downrigging/live baiting for kingies and cubing for YFT.

I have around a $1k to spend and was thinking more an overhead like a torsa 40.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

When i saw this topic i was thinking MAYBE a shimano spheros 14000fa with the upgraded drag etc and a full spool of 50lb braid.

Would that be an ideal reel for what frank is looking to do?

cheers james

either the torsa 40 or 30 hold a heap of line. I got a 16 for downrigging and it works great.

Line capacity on a 16 is a little low (250meters of 80lb braid!!!) but its good as its narrow and you can lay line back on the reel without thumbing too much.

The torsa 40 is setup so it can be attached to a harness but if your going such a big reel wouldnt you go a TIAGRA say 30 or 50. 2 speed and about the same price.

Just got the new stella 20000 and its a cool bit of gear. Either way you go you wont be dissapointed.

Its your choice mate.

i am looking at same thing...

kingy/jew with a once in blue moon fin hunt and am looking at the tyrnos 30 2 speed with a fishfinder special to attach it to...

small enough to use in harbour an surrounds and able to pull a reasonable big fin in without too many hassles.... tony uses 2 of the older ones along with tld/tiagra combos so thats good enough for me as they get a good workout.....

i thought about the torsa but its a bit more $ and i may not need the extra grunt it provides....

i think its horses for coarses and out of the ones mentioned i think its just personal preference......

good luck whichever way you go........

cheers...steve.....

ps: i think someones new bling is nearly ready to come off the rotissary . .. will be very nice mate......

I was thinking the same thing - an Avet matched up with a Hastings GUSA rod. Top combination I reckon.

Frank, you can save a bit of dough if you build the rod yourself (easy peasey). I have nearly finshed building my Hastings 24kg rod. The all up cost of the rod was just under $400. Leaves over $600 for you to buy the Avet.

Ask Tony from fishfinder about the rods. I am sure he will vouch for their quality.

Evets.
