Which Overhead Rod

Recommended Posts

I have an overhead/baitcast reel that needs a rod. Can I get some suggestions ? It is a Pfluger Trion 66LH with 20lb mono.

It's essentially a baitcaster or a very small overhead with levelwind.

Cool reel with baitclicker function, so I will line this up side by side with my baitrunner to see which is the better combo - spinning vs overhead :biggrin2:

After a rod preferably:

* under $100 unless you can convince me otherwise

* longer than 7ft (only landbased fishing, but not off the rocks), probably don't need anything longer than 10'

* 2 piece would be required if longer than 7ft

Have not read too many landbased/baitcaster/baitfishing/overhead posts, but mostly overhead rods for boat fishing/trolling. Look forward to your opinions.

Hi Stylo The cheaper overheads in two piece have a tendency to turn at the ferrule under load, unlike spinning rods where the reel is below the rod and the guides facing downwards in the opposite direction. If you want a good overhead, it's better to buy a one piece rod. If you are looking for good value in a one piece you could take a look at the Tica range around 7' and 8' one piece rods. Take a close look at the quality from Tica, the good real seat, guides suited to braid, and value for money at around $140.

Cheers

Shimano bb10, 2 piece overhead stick. 10ft long & fishes 15kg max I reckon.

I wouldn't go under 10ft landbased as the extra length gives you a few more options on your areas to fish.

$120 -140.00 & a really fun rod . Goes well with an ABU 7000 & 10kg braid as well. Light & casts a mile.

One of my fave combos & has knocked over many a good fish from the stones & sand.

Cheers,

Grant.

hi jewhunter, when you say no shorter than a 10 foot rod, are you referring solely to overhead rods (due to the fact they may be more difficult (for me) to cast ?) or also to spinning gear ?

I have been using an 8 foot spinning rod for landbased livebaiting / dead baits and does the job fine ..

Both overhead & threadline rods.

It's a personal choice. I like them a bit longer. You can't lob out a really big bait on a short rod & anything under 10ft is pretty useless when bait fishing a beach as you nead the height to clear the shorebreak.

I just think a bit more length is a better allrounder.

Each to there own though.

Grant.

You're definitely right .. I have never beach fished .. so I guess I have never had a need to or had a chance to try a nice long beach rod :1fishing1:

I'll take a look for the BB this weekend ..
