pirate2540
hi, was wondering, when the manufacturators plates states max hp, is it illegal to go over that? or do u have to beef up the transom to accomidate a larger motor? boat i was looking at purchasing has a max hp of 90 and a wieght of 180 kg on transom, motor i wanted to install is a 115hp with a wieght of 145kg, thanks in advance for any help..pirate
roosterman
hi pirate, you will have issues with insurance if you go over the rated hp... in saying this i know of a couple boats that ore overpowered and its ok if the transom holds an your prepared to take the risk...... im sure others like craig from huett marine will be more specific on this though... just my 2 bobs worth...cheers...steve.... a boat
Hi Pirate, if the boat is new than warranty will be voided and as Steve says your bigger problem will be insurance. It is a bit strange that the boat has a weight rating of 180KG, but only 90HP. Post or PM me with the brand of boat and I will give you my thoughts. If you have your heart set on the boat and really want the 115HP at 145KG, than a phone call to the insurance company might be worth while because you will be under the weight, but in our experience you need to be under both weight and HP to have coverage and be legal. Cheers, Huey.
The Iceman
I think you need to forget about thinking weight and horsepower From an engineering point of view the transom may be able to hold the weight but may not be able to hold the thrust of the motor They are two completely different types of stress on the transom
pelican
Some boats had a higher weight rating if they had the wider cutout so twins could be put on. If it has a very wide motor well cut out in the transom this may be why as twins were so heavy. Have seen a couple of boats that have been rebirthed where plates have been modified or switched by owners so they can repower - have a close look to see if it is original and huey will know if it was normal for that model. pel
