glennmreid
Went to my usual spot this afternoon. Caught up with a fellow raider Mike(browney1). Great to meet you Mike.Looking forward to another fishing session with you. When I got there. Mike was already set up. After a few minutes, I was ready. I cast out my 1st pilchard for the day, and left the rod in the holder. At the same time decided tp try and catch some mullet to use as a livie. There I am in the water with my boots on, trying to catch mullet. Then I heard that sound of the baitrunner in action on my Shimano baitrunner. I grabbed the rod, and the battle was on. Half way through the battle, Mike asked if could make a bet on what fish t was. The way it was head shaking, and the amount of line it was taking, I thought it was a big flattie. Trust me to hook into a big flattie when I was only using a 12lb leader. After about 15 mins, I brought the fish in. With Mike's help, he netted the fish. I couldn't believe it. It was a 51cm Australian Salmon, which weighed just under a 3kg mark. One thing is for sure, these salmon do fight hard. I was so surprised. I never expected to catch a salmon this far up. Not long under, Mike hooked into a good 42cm flattie, pictures below. After that, we caught some smaller bream and tailor. In the meantime, I managed to caught a mullet around the 30cm mark. Perfect Jew livie. Mike left around 5pm, and I continued fishing. Something smashed into my pilchards. The baitrunner went into action, but failed to hook up. Then, the live mullet who was quiet for a while, started to go crazy. Then bang, a strike then it went all quiet. I brought the live mullet in, and you wouldn't believe it ,only to find a head left. I'm assuming either a good flattie, and or jew. We did notice alot of surface action later on. Thanks for the arvo session Mike, look forward to the next time. Next time, hopefully that jewie we are after. Australian Salmon 51cm, just under 3kg

glennmreid
Still can't believe I caught a salmon up there. It's like fishing at Manly's Oceanworld.
glennmreid
Glenn, I cant belive only the head came back on the mullet. That mullet was huge! To add to the report, i hooked into a tailor and threw him out live, after we saw him go crazy I bought him back in to see him dead with a few teeth marks on the side. After this i butterflied him and threw him out again. Glenn and I saw something playing around with it. When it was time for me to go, i reeled it in to find to two side fillets gone. There has to be something big in there! I am going out today to stock up on some yakkas which im going to use next week. Glenn is a great bloke and it was a pleasure fishing with you. Hopefully we can meet up again next time Cheers, Mike There is definately something big out there. As we said, that mullet was a big one. You were right about how live bait react when something is around. Just after you left, the mullet went absolutely crazy. More than before. The rod went bending over crazy the silence. Only a head left. Those teeth marks on your live tailor were from a decent size fish. Looking forward to nex t time!

zen801
Hi Glenn, Mate it never ceases to amaze me what can be caught up there. Jewies are certainly a strong possibility ATM. Also chances are that they will be big ones at least in the 7-8 kg and up. I am going out on Friday morning for another shot at em before it gets much colder. The other day my hands didnt want to work - glad i didnt have to re rig. With jews as long as your fishing known jewie hangouts its only a matter of time and patience. Mate you should hitch a ride in my tinnie and we can try at a couple of my spots. Cheers
andrew399
That does sound like a good session up there! What do you rekon it was that took your mullet? Im thinking bull shark because you would expect a jewie to run with it not just bite it in half wouldnt you? Maybe a 2 hook rig will see the culprit get caught next time. Zenman - How long into the season do Jewies stay up past Rosie in general?

Zenman - How long into the season do Jewies stay up past Rosie in general? Dicko, Last year they hung around near the Spit right through winter almost. Up past rosie probably the same. Just not many people fish right through winter. I give up fishing by mid winter if not catching fish and then start again in Sept - Oct. Mate i am getting old and winter is tough on the war injuries. mike
