Tafe Course - Fishing Industry, Recreational Services

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of enrolling in the TAFE Fishing Industry, Recreational Services course to get some good solid knowledge about all round fishing. I met a tafe teacher at a local tackle store and he mentioned what the students studied and had weekend outings to test their knowledge.

Has anyone studied the course? Can anyone provide any comments?

I am thinking about doing the general deckhand course as well.

If anyone knows what goes on with this sort of stuff or we have some TAFE people on line ,let us know.

Cheers Stewy

We had a radio course earlier in the year and 100 % pass

Doesnt sound like anyone's done this course! LOL... everyone's so lucky to have either 1. their old man to teach them secrets or 2. friends to teach them or 3. lots and lots of time!!

I will do some "fishing" around and see what info I can find.

I have many connections in the TAFE sector. Perhaps I can ask a TAFE person to hold an info session for us.

Pretty much thats why ive planned to enroll into the course. I met a guy named "Sol" and absolutely impressed me with his knowledge, humbleness, and friendliness. He said he was a teacher for the course..

a few years back i did a marine tafe course at the brisbane institute. it was a diploma of fisheries compliance. in the course they covered everything from fishing legislation to master class five navigation including coxwains ticket and marine radio ticket.

they also taught a lot of practical stuff and you even got some sea time in the tafe vessel for your log book.

it was pretty cool in the fact that almost all the students were mad keen fisherman.

the object of the course is to qualify you to be a fisheries officer. The problem is that there is very limited job prospects in the fisheries departments australia wide and the fact that you have to compete with uni students with honour degrees in marine biologymakes it almost impossible to get in.

so obviously i am not a fisheries officer, but the knowledge learnt in the course was great for my boating and fishing skills.

I'm glad i'm not working in that field anyway cause some of those blokes are on the nose.

Hi All

The course you are talking about is Certificate 3 in Fishing Industry Recreational Service No 8196 and it is a course that I desined and put together about 12 years ago.

It took me (with a couple of other people) about 18 months to put it together.

I did run it at Miller College of TAFE for 3 years, but management decided it need to run elsewhere.

It has now gone through it's second revision (every 5 years), it will be due to be revised again to keep up with industry standards.

The course is designed for people who would want to work in the recreational Fishing Industry.

Currently there are a number of colleges that are offerring this course. They are Armidale, Cooma, Kurri Kurri, National Environment Centre (Albury) and distance learning through the Tenayr campus at Grafton.

Thanks for that Gary.

My contacts tell me that Richmond (TAFE Western Sydney) is running this course next semester :)

It runs one evening a week with practical field work on some weekends.

There is an enrolment day on July 3rd at Richmond 1pm - 7pm for anyone interested as GeekFisherman mentioned.

I have attached the pdf of the course outline for anyone that wants it. Kay Carter is the Head Teacher (woohoo a woman) and her details appear on the pdf download.
