pmak
Belated report - fished Kogarah Bay landbased on Sunday 1st June. Woke up 4.30am and could not go back to sleep - so why not go for a fish!! Was at my new untried spot at 6.30am to fish the high tide of 7.00am. The forecast was for showers (which have persisted for the whole week) and I could see the sun just behind some clouds in the horizon. Was trying out the Gulp 3" fry in Lime Tiger in the low light conditions (says it glows on the packet). Got some nibbles from small tailor before I set the hooks on something bigger. There was some weight at the end of the line and a the fish was giving my Tierra a good workout. Bream, I thought, having got a few in the area of late but as I managed to coax the fish closer to shore, the fish was longish - school jew perhaps? I was lucky I had brought my net along and managed to land the bugger. Crikey - it was the biggest sand whiting I had ever seen!! A new PB for me. Sorry for the poor photo - taken on my phone in low light conditions. Those familiar with the NSW DPI sticker would know the Blue-eye cod just behind the top of the tail of the whiting is around the 46-47cm mark. So, I'll call it at 46cm at around 800grams. Left at 8.30am with a bream as well on the same lure. Winter fishing aint that bad after all ....

Davemmm
46cm is a very nice whiting.Well done on the PB. Kogarah Bay produces some very nice fish at times and is probably better landbased than boat. The middle of the bay is a bit of a dessert but the edges, boats and wharves fish pretty well. The sandy spots on the west go well for whiting but you will get them in other parts. Boban
That's a ripper of a fish mate. Absolute ripper. My best is 42cm off Umina beach and I couldn't believe how big it was then and I have never come close since. I can only imagine your surprise in getting a 46cm model. Gee that's a big whiting. Tony Soprano
Ripper fish buddy! Any whiting over 35cm goes pretty hard on the light stuff so I reckon that one would've given a good account of itself... Cheers Tony
pmak
Thanks for all the replies guys. At that size, they do go hard. Seeing the fish for the first time as I brought it into view was quite exciting as it's fins were all flared out giving it a real aggressive look. Really glad I had my landing net with me this time. It looks like downhill from now on - don't know if I'd be able to beat that PB. The tierra reel is so much smoother than the Daiwa Rexal Xi that I had though it's not as quiet as I'd like it to be. Love the matt blue finish though! Need to get that big bream next ....
