Distance Casting: Spinning Vs Overhead

In the world of tournament casting with mono and a shock leader overheads rule. with 18 gram plugs its only a matter of a couple of meters but as weight increases overheads get further in front of threadlines.

this can be seen by looking at the UKSF records from the UK

http://uksf.sea-angler.org/records.html

In Tournament Level Line casting, where the use of braid is permitted, threadlines seem to have the edge.

When it comes to fishing its really personal preference and what tackle suits the style of fishing. For me with lighter weights say upto 50 grams I would go with spin gear and braid, 50 grams and up its overhead all the way. Beach fishing for me is always overheads, can fish 2 to 5 ounces and bait in a range from 20 meters to 120 meters.

i see...thanks for that.

is tournament casting a big thing over here? i'm just wondering because as i was selling my daiwa tournament reels, i got heaps of inquiries from europe but none here. the europeans were offering over what i was prepared to accept.

i'm thinking of keeping one so i can give it go because it certainly got me interested

Wish I could get up to the higher end of your range... hoping its just practice, and a matter of using the right gear, which I will be able to test tonight!

Ottherwise it's technique, or I need to go back to the drawing board altogether..

averaging 25/30 meteres with my surf casting.. would be stoked to hit the 50 metre mark at this stage!

Hottyscotty,

There is a small but dedicated bunch of distance casters in Australia. NSW, Vic, SA and WA that I know of.

All of them fish as much if not more then they cast over grass, all of them good blokes and very willing to help.

A few of them are top casters that could and have competed with the best in the world.

Beware mate!!!!!! if start playing with one of those Diawa's you may get addicted.

Its a bit to do with all the things you mention. Its takes a bit a practice, the right gear certainly helps if chasing big distance, but mostly its technique.

For me to learn to cast 200+ meters down the park took about a year of practise and learning technique. The gear is not over the top, a killwell Pendulum 1 blank and an Abu 6500 CT mag.

The first part of this Video is a Nitro Messiah, this is not how I would cast fishing, just seeing how far the Nitro would cast a 2 ounce snapper lead.

The result was a best cast of 153 meters.

Cheers Gary

200 Metres :1yikes:

I've just lost all hope!!!! hahaha

Sure i'll get there... really need to pick a technique and try to master it..

do u pendulum cast?

Have only tried off the ground for now after seeing some vids on youtube, or sometimes not even off the ground..

Ultimately a beach session with someone that can really cast would be more than beneficial, sometimes seeing someone else do it in person helps you really see what it is you are doing wrong... tackle they use, size of sinkers etc, can also provide lots of clues..

Yes, I pendulum cast, but not very often when I'm fishing.

Off The Ground (OTG) is a great beach fishing cast, safe when used with a shock leader and OTG is all that is needed most of the time.

OTG is also the cast you really need to master before you try to Pendulum Cast.

here is a couple of really good OTG casting vids
