Hey TB,

Don't know about jewies... I'm still chasing my first on a plastic... but I mostly use these 2 successfully on kings. One lighter, one heavier.

Light outfit:

Shimano Stradic 2500 spooled with 10lb Platypus Superbraid, Strudwick SicStick 7' 4-6kg rod

- I use this one for casting to surface feeding fish in open water.

Shimano Stradic 4000 spooled with 20lb Bionic Braid, Berkley Dropshot 7'6" 4-8kg rod (to be replaced in the coming King season by my shiny new Fireblood and Daiwa TDSol rod combo)

- I use this one for fishing around marker buoys and moorings.

Sometimes I up the ante a little and pull out a 5-10kg T-Curve rod/30lb braid combo but this isn't as effortless to fish with.

Obvioulsy the brands/models aren't critical but the basic sizes/combos are well balanced, sweet to fish with and very effective (although sometimes I wish I was fishing with an elephant gun around the marker buoys). I haven't chased kings in Botany Bay but given that it's such open water, the lighter outfit would probably be the one I'd choose. Maybe up the braid to 15lb to make it a bit more of an 'allrounder'.

thanx slinky,

i had a look at the saros 3000 the other day and the td advantage3000, now price wise the saros is on sale and has that great spool lip and the advantage is more expensive and heavier but i wasnt 100% because i dont wont to rush into it.

do those rods have the power in the butt section to pull away the kings from structure ??

cheers i like the sound of the stradic 4000 outfit

Top reply!! That's it Tony you've got it mate. We'll use the elephant guns to blow the necks off the markers buoys and watch the boats follow the heads up the harbour

Well done mate, we'll have it all to ourselves when I bail you out.

Cheers

Yeah TB... the decent graphite spin rods set up for plastic fishing these days all have pretty sensitive tips for flicking relatively light lures a long way but plenty in reserve for fighting fish.

I'm not a Shimano die hard either although most of my reels are Shimanos... any of the good quality Diawas and Shimanos are going to do the job well (and there are some good Penn, Pfleuger, Okuma reels too). I don't know the Daiwa reels as well as the shimanos so I won't comment on the Saros vs TD Advantage but the 3000 size would be a great versatile reel.

Get the best quality reel you can though... the biggest advantage with all the better reels is the incredible versatility you get from the quality drag systems and engineering. These days its possible to get a reel that is small enough to sensibly fish for bream and trevally but strong enough to also cope with tuna and kings... just load the spool with the line to suit the job.
