Hi Daleyboy

Dale, I've mostly had Fibreglass boats and only recently changed to a painted alloy boat, so I'd also like advice from other members myself on cleaning and polishing the paint work on my alloy boat.

I used to use 3M fibreglass cleaner and the wax based boat polishes on my fibreglass boats and I occasionally gave them a light cut back, again with a product made specially for fibreglass boats.

I found that shampooing the boat after use and giving it an even spread of grape seed oil gave the finish an oily film over it, gave it futher protection and kept off the dry look you get from exposure to salt and sun.

It would be good if our members could give advice on both gel coated and painted boats and it would be good if Huey from Huett Marine gives his advice on cleaning and polishing both types of boats.

Cheers

Hi Guys

I have a white fibreglass 20'Trophy Walkaround and when I get scuff marks on it I use a product called Chux magic eraser.

It is the best thing for cleaning marks from the hull and deck and doesn't take of the poished surface.

I take my boat to our local carwash after every use and high pressure suds the entire boat and then rinse it with fresh water. It's then dried and when I get it home I have a custom fitted cover to keep the elements from the boat.

12 months old and looks like brand new

Some TLC goes a long way

Thanks Jewgaffer

When you say shampooing .. do use normal hair shampoo??

Thats the kinda info i was after .. cheap household products that work just as well (or better) than the overpriced specialty cleaning products made especially for boats.

Dale as a matter of fact I use dishwasher liquid and I find it less harsh over long term use than the lemon based concentrates etc. Hair shampoo has a mild cleansing agent in it and I don't think it would do any harm. I don't seem to be losing any hair and I use hair shampoo regularly and I don't light up my rolly own again until after I shower

Hi all,

I wash down my tinnie (painted) every now and then with dishwashing detergent in warm water.

After that hose it all off.

The paint jobs is 9 nine years old and still looks excellent.

Cheap and does the job.

Just a note that dishwashing detergent is about as harsh a surfactant as you can get. It will strip off any wax (or grapeseed oil) coating you put on the boat surface. If you do wax the surface, better to use a quality automotive cleaner as these are much milder.

Hi Dale...

not so much to what to use.... as so much as what not to use!!!!!!!!!!!!!

over the last couple of seasons i opted to clean my paintwork with a product called "boat wash"

made by (best not mention).....certainaly moved those black marks any diesel grime, blood gut's and anything else

you care mention.......trouble is though i reckon i have the streakiest boat finish on Fish raiders

site with ease.....so stay away from that one....

also have been useing rain x on the windows in aid to better vision

result all window seals rubbers will have to be replaced due to adverse reaction with the product...

........ditto to that one as well...

Cheers Warnie...
