brother of tang Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 what about some sort of velcro flaps on the outside to cover the zippers. I know velcro isn't water proof, but atleast the water has to penetrate both the zipper and the velcro. Shouldn't be too hard or expensive either... Just a thought
jewgaffer Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 (edited) Hi Arman You can buy stronger, good quality tightly woven velcro straps and either glue the velcro along the edges onto plastic or in the case of acryllic marine canvas etc, get a lady with a heavy duty sewing machine to neatly sew the velcro into the material onto the inside section of the zipper and doing that should keep the water out, of course the bottom section of the velcro would have to be wider than the section closest to the zipper body, and there would also be enough natural room to pull the zipper open or closed from the outside. Cheers jewgaffer Edited June 24, 2008 by jewgaffer
mr magoo Posted June 24, 2008 Author Posted June 24, 2008 the velcro would work to a degree but i would think it would make it dificult to put the clears on as its hard enough to do it now ,ive heard about waterproof zippers anyone heard about them or know were i can source them would like to thank you guys for taking the time to reply cheers arman

Cheers jewgaffer if you put the velcro on the inside of the zippers how is that going to help? the water will still come through the zipper as it did before and then run down the velcro and end up in the boat. If I have have missed something jewgaffer, please explain, but it just doesn't add up to me mate.
pelican Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 (edited) Go over the waves not through them . Sell the submarine!! Just joking Drysuits used for diving have zippers that have a membrane and are waterproof, like most diving things they may not stand up to UV exposre very well but I don't know. They can be pretty stiff so you have to be careful not to tear them wetsuits so not sure how they would go on clears unless they were very strong. Other boats on them have a flap on the outside that overlaps the zipper and is quite stiff so it doesn't flog about. Stops that dribble when it rains but still lets a little water seep through but at least it isn't blown through by the wind pressure. The zipper seal products we have used on older tents and they work ok but we have only used then on small guage zippers so don't know how they would go on bigger zips. Edited June 24, 2008 by pelican
BlacknBlue Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Pelican is on the money, take your clears to a marine trimmer and get him to sow on some clear flaps over the outside of the zips- very common in larger boats. I am a bit surprised whoever made up the clears didnt do this origionally. I understand there are new waterproofed zippers available now with stepped teeth, but are very expensive.
