Barry Mano Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Can somebody tell me if the grase leaking from the prop area is a major concern or could it be that the damn thing has been sitting in yard too long as the wife has applied the handbrake?
netic Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Mate it looks like gearbox oil, could have screwed seal
Sammy0884 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Hi Mate, Looks like it could be a damaged gearbox seal... what colour is the oil? if it is blue or gold that would suggest gearbox oil... if it is black, it could be an excess of 2 stroke oil draining through the engine whilst hot. have you removed the prop to inspect? is there any fishing like around the shaft? Good luck
a boat Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 (edited) Hi Barry, that is excessive engine oil that runs down the exhaust tube and out the prop. If a pre-mix engine you are using the wrong ratio, if oil injected then I would be guessing that you are sucking air in the fuel lines causing an over oiling situation. Also I would not mind betting that you are running too cold because the thermostat is stick open or someone has removed. Also I would guess you are using an inferior oil. If it was gear oil it will be a milky colour due to the water getting in and mixing with gear oil and if oil can get out, water can get it. To confirm, take out bottom drain screw, keeping the top one in and you should not have alot of oil come out and you can check the condition-ideally wants to be a honey colour. That said, it is unburnt engine oil. Check these things and let us know. Cheers, Huey. PS, to me it looks like a very new engine without any paint off prop or skeg and if so you would of been on a rich oil mixture (25:1 for the first few hours break-in) and once you switch to 50:1 and run a good oil like XD-50 you will see this go away after an hour or so more run time-when the better half lets you. Barry Mano Posted June 18, 2008 Author Posted June 18, 2008 Thanks Huey I will have a good look on the weekend. The prop is new but this is due to the damage caused by my previous mechanic not tightning a bolt. When I took my boat out after a service the bolt directly above the prop fell out and the prop smashed into it causing massive damage to the prop and motor. Not sure if there was any damage internally but the trusty mechanic told me there wasn't. The engine is a 2 stroke 50hp injected.

How good is to have a bloke like Huey on hand with a proffessional response every time. The new motor that came with the Poly did precisely what yours has, albeit not as heavy. The advice i received from a marine mechanic mate was exactly the same as Hueys - excess oil from running rich for the first few hours. Dave

Look after him raiders Cheers mrsswordfisherman
a boat Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Hi Barry, I see, yes it made a mess of the prop and skeg, I imagine you were not just idleing when this happened. I hope you did not pay for it. Anyway with your oil injection system on your outboard, if as I mentioned, it sucks air in the fuel line the fuel becomes aerated and causes a rich oil mixture to go into the engine. Have a good look at all the fuel lines and make sure none of the connections are loose and would allow air to be sucked in. Also I would be wanting to make sure she is getting to correct temp at idle and not running cold and do yourself a favour and with your oil injected outboard try XD-100 oil (it will cost a little more) or at least XD-50 and you will not see any smoke and is the best oil to run in her. Also I hope you are not disconnecting the fuel line and running dry after use while flushing because doing that fills the carbys full of oil and the oil runs out the prop and the outboard becomes hard to start next time. Cheers, Huey. Donna and Dave thanks for the kind words.
