diver1 Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 i fish lake macquarie from my boat , im useing soft plastics (and loveing them) but what i wana do is set another rod with bait on it (in case of a jewie or a big flatty or anything 4 that matter) that can just drift along the bottom while im drifting and flicking me sp. question is what bait u think i should drift? whole pilly, frozen squid(thawed of course), mullet strips, tailor strips, prawns? or just try me luck n c wat happens? any thoughts are appreciated. thanks.
brickman Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 salted fillet of slimmy or bonito[salted for at least a week] set and forget ,big flattys love it gary
Davemmm Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 If you are going to leave a bait bouncing along the bottom whilst not really paying much attention then it should be something quite firm. Prawns, nippers etc will just get pulled or picked off. As said a nice salted fillet or slab will do the trick. I usually have a handline dropped straight under the boat with a mullet or tailor strip and a 4/0 hook. The handline means it is out of the way whilst you attend to your rods or flick sp's. Dave
diver1 Posted June 20, 2008 Author Posted June 20, 2008 have never used liveies b4, dnt knw how and have never been shown, i mite try get some1 to show me.
The Iceman Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Why dont you use a bigger plastic on the drift rod A mate of mine does this all the time and catches plenty of flatties 9gm squidgy fishhead jighead with a 100mm squidgy fish on it would be a good start

dpinta Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 I often drift plastics and they work well. But if you want to set and forget a bait for mainly big fish you cant go past a livie. Mullet and yellowtail are good because they are quite tough and dont require too much work to keep alive
Ray R Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 Yep I agree, I have used the flick with one plastic and leave one in the rod holder just boucing along with the drift technique, it does work, although it can get hectic if they are on the chew. The plastic on the rod in the rod holder I generally make larger and a heavier jig head...
