Dear Raiders

Could someone please tell me if a boat is rated at carrying 5 people at 75kg per person, does that mean that I can carry 6 smaller people that add up to the total weight given that I have all the safety gear for 6 people. The problem is I am looking for a new boat eg 4.89 stacer Easyrider(huey told me about it)so we as a family can go boating(wife 2 girls 14&11)but when family goes boating we have to take 2 friends of the girls. Why can't they just enjoy the company of their mummy & daddy?Am I missing something?

Thanks

If the boat is registered for 5 people , that is the maximum number you may have on board , regardless of their weight. If Maritime or the Water Rats pull you over , and you have more bodies on board than you have allowed on your yellow sticker , its gonna cost ya heaps !! ( This applies for persons over 12 years old , between 1 and 12 they count as half a person!)

More info can be found HERE

As for teenage girls , who the hell knows ?

Hey Bullethead,

I have a 3-4 yr old Stacer easyrider. We had a similar problem when our young bloke, his mates and friends kids turned 12. We try and base around a convenient access beach now when tubing etc.

Another aspect to be aware of - people on tubes, skis etc count also. We bought a 3 person hotdog in summer, so now with 3 on the hotdog can only legally carry the driver and observer in the boat with 3 up.

Many times I wish I had gone up a size with ours now to allow 6, but the cost was more than the budget. More room for fishing etc too, the 4.89 doesnt have a huge amount of space behind the driver but we get around OK, just keep shooing them up the front.

Another prob with the big hotdog is room on the boat when trying to motor somewhere, the tube used to squeese in up front, with the hotdog we put it on a shortened line and tow it empty till we get were we want to.

I did my practical training in one of the largest Stacer bowrider, would love to own one of those :biggrin2:

If you are near the Central coast, PM me and let me know if you want to experience the size etc on the water with the family. The newer model has a different transom but appears to be basically the same. Cant promise on the weather at the moment though :1badmood:

Hi Bullethead, the Stacer 489 Easyrider is rated to 6 people, so you do not have a problem. The 5 rating is for the boat to pass the LEVEL floatation swamp test, but the boat is legally allowed to carry 6 adults.

Until the industry adopts the LEVEL floataion rating that the Telwater built boats have (Stacer and Quintrex), these boats will have two ratings and the Stacer is 6 adults, due to the extra foam it has and the extra safety of LEVEL floatation and self draining cockpit.

Cheers,

Huey.

Isnt there some allowance to exceed capacity for transporting people if you are not planning? I wish i could be classed as a 75kg person

Hi Bullethead, yes we are open from 8.30-3.00 on Saturdays.

Jim, speed has got nothing to do with load rating, if a boat is rated to 6 adults that is all you are allowed no matter the speed. Children, upto about 13 I think, are rated as 1/2 an adult so in theory the 489 Stacer in question could have 4 adults and 4 kids and still be legal.

Cheers,

Huey.

So when you see 6 or 8 adults in a dingy ferrying out to a yacht or cruiser they are definetly breaking the law?

Yes, but the good MSB officers would I guess give them a warning and use a bit of common sense, but I think the user should also use some common sense and make two trips, but the worse that could happen I guess is they get wet.

That looks like a nice boat.I wonder how the girls will feel being seen in a pre-loved boat.Wouldn't bother me.I'll have to consult them.
