Guest Jocool
Dont you just hate it when fishing is just too much hard work? I never thought I would see the day that I wish I hadn't gone out...but today I wish I hadn't. With Dad and number daughter aboard, we motored from Rose Bay at a sedate 5:15. Later than I wanted, but dad didn't agree to an early start. Over to Balmoral for a supply of bait. Again, plenty of Yakkas...but no squid. I think dad has regressed a bit. After thinking I had won him over to my way of thinking and doing things over the last few months, he totally gave me the tom tits today! We were supposed to concentrate on squid, with my daughter taking care of yakka duties. He thought it would be more fun to jig for yakkas and didnt worry too much about getting squid! Tried hanging livies near a couple of markers for nil runs. Went out in fairly sloppy conditions to North Head and used a squid which was caught last week, for just a small run that dropped the hook. At this stage my poor girl started ralphing. Apparently she gets seasick! Her younger sister doesnt have that problem. Moved in to calmer waters around one of the Wedding Cakes. Raised one Trev at about 28 cms which gave me a bit of curry on 4 lb mono. At this stage dad decided that he wanted to fish a big lump of lead on the bottom, with 2 dropper hooks rigged to it...against my advice. Few minutes later his line was screaming of the reel! he wasnt too sure how to handle it so passed the rod to me. I was a bit sceptical of his knot tying skills, and of course he didnt let me tie them for him. Low and behold...the hooks parted company from the line due to shoddy knots...But guess what...Its MY FAULT!!! I dropped the fish intentionally!!!! Was a good fish too! Feel better now...got that of my chest! Incidently, while jigging for bait we got this fish pictured below. Went about 20 cm, and I have never seen one before. Can anyone tell me what it is? It came of the weed beds at the island at Balmoral. Edited January 29, 2005 by Jocool
Guest bluecod
Joe, Sounds like a bummed out day but had you handled that fish incorrectly it would have been a hell of a lot worse! Happy Holidays - Happy Moments call it for what you like, but a black trevally can inflict severe pain that lasts a long time - these things get cut off and left alone. Lucky! Courtesy FishVic "the fish with the bizarre name of 'happy moments' becomes a black trevally. But changing the 'happy moments' name doesn't alter the fact that if one of the rotten things stings you, you'll be in agony for hours irrespective of what they call the bloody things. Maybe they should have changed its name to 'un-happy' moments." and LINK Edited January 29, 2005 by bluecod
Pukka
.. looks like one of those poisonous 'happy moments' fish Joe. Hard luck on the fishing, but at least you got out there and gave your Dad and Daughter a day out on the water. Joe the Pommy One

Narralakes
Too bad about the fishing today Joe, dont forget, you wouldnt have been the only one. Its always good reading your posts and we all remember the ones that didnt get away. We'll have to give the pelagics a go with the fly soon, dont have to worry about finding squid then. Lance.S
Hi Joe I know exactly what you mean. On the way to the boat ramp my father always comments on what he needs to be doing at home. Whether it be mowing the lawn to cleaning up his shed. Then the next comment (most times even before our first fish of the day) is "So what time do you think we will be leaving to go home?" Definately makes for a hard days fishing. Cheers Lance
Guest Jocool
Definately makes for a hard days fishing. Cheers Lance 29625[/snapback] Lance...Don't get me wrong..I love fishing with my dad. But yesterday, I don't know what it was. He just kept irking me, and pushing me in a joking way. When I snapped he acted all hurt and pissed of that I would get upset, which made me even MORE upset! Just one of those days I guess. One other point that didn't impress me at all, was the conduct of a charter operator. Whilst at the Wedding Cake, and losing my fish, a customer on board this charter boat, hooked and landed a King. They measured it at just under 60cm...56-57 was the call I heard...and then the priest was brought out to annoint the undersize King. Very ordinary behaviour I would have thought! Guest hottuna
Joe, pity out that. One thing ive leart, esp when fishing the harbour. ALWAY take some fresh "sushimi' as they call it squid bought from any good co op. My local one hear in wetherill park gets his fresh squid on mondays and wedensdays, i have to say its the best squid ive ever bought and still "clear". On sat they worked a treat on kings around the wedding cakes, just stripped up and put on a 2/0 hook. Dan
Bashir
If you get a decent sized happy moment, give them a go in the frying pan, they're actually very nice to eat. Just watch out for those spikes!!
