Hi All,

Heading upp North to escape the winter cold for a week in late July, and in the process of booking myself a charter...

Just curious as to what others woudl do given the opportunity?

Would you go Estuary? or Reef?

Below is an indication of species about at this time of year...

Estuary could be sweet... Mangrove Jack, Estuary Cod, Fingermark and Queenies would top my list of fish I'd want to catch...

Offshore/reef who can resist a Spaniard or some powerhouse GT's...

Estuary -

Javelin fish Permit Bream species Tropical flathead

Trevally species Queenfish Mud crabs Fingermark

Whiting Estuary cod Mangrove jack Jungle perch

Archer fish School mackeral (at the mouth of the Daintree)

Offshore/Reef –

Mackeral species Trevally species Queenfish GT’s

Nannygai - large and small mouth Coral Trout Tuna species

Cod species

What would you other raiders do? Or have you done already?

dilemma...

G'day mate.

You might not have to make a choice, depending on what Charter provider you use. For example, numerous operators up north will offer estuary fishing, with the option of targetting pelagics if weather conditions permit. That way you have the best of at least 2 of the options you discussed.

If you had to book one specific option, I would lean towards estuary charters, only because this type of fishing is generally available regardless of weather conditions. There is nothing worse than organising that 'trip of a lifetime' away, only to have it ruined by foul weather.

I'm sure there will be plenty of feedback on this subject to help you make your choice. Have a great time, mate, and take heaps of photos to accompany your report!!

Probably look at doing a sportsfishing type one where you have the option of doing both on the same trip, i'd love to eat some fresh fingermark again, what part are you going to?

I'm staying in Palm Cove... but planning on doing a day trip up to the Daintree River/Rainforest and am thinking that a sneaky half day charter on our daintree day trip would fit in quite nicely!

Beyond that, and time permitting, might try and squeeze an addiitional one in around Cairns/Palm Cove somewhere...
