georgieboy Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 hey guys Im going to be fishing around Brooklyn tonight with fish fillets or livies if i can get some. Was just wondering if you think i should be using a wire trace in case of hairtail, will this discourage a jewie?Jew is my target fish but i would b pretty annoyed if a hairtail bit me off. thanks Georgieboy
andrew399 Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 I think that you are going to have to make a trade off... In my opinion the use of wire will put off a jew, but in saying that if you are fishing really deep water there wont be much light so you may get away with it... you could have to rods out, 1 with wire 1 without...

GregL Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 I think you would be safe as I have never heard of hairtail up that way. They more like the clear deep waters of Cowan/Coal and Candle. Greg
jewgaffer Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 The use of wire does not affect a jewfish take whatsoever. It's hard to guage how hard they pull against the wire because they're well and truly hooked up hard and tight and running off by then. Here's one example and not even considering the jew caught on soft multi wire rigs and even the lighter flathead rigs - While waiting for the school bull skarks to come in with the hard heavy wire on in the Richmond at Ballina with commercial fishing friends using rods and live bull mullet, we have often caught late high tide jew, and even while fishing where standout wire rigs are the easiest to handle as paternostas for other species and these present as much more of a contraption to fish than singles, if there is such a worry with these species when fishing with bait. I'm sure we'll see jew caught on the hairtail wire at the Hairtail social weekend. I'll be participating myself but we will be fishing in jewfish terrritory, each way for a bi catch and at longer odds for hairtail. Along with eels and pike eels, hairtail can appear in most parts of the system at any time of the year, including one time a few years ago on a hot January day when fishing near Dangar Island with an old friend Italian Sam and my older grandson James ,when we caught one of each variety. The toothy fish the hairtail, and the pike eel and even ordinary river eel can cut thru, and these critters will all serate or badly damage the 80lb mono leader on a jew rig. I believe, with the chance of larger size jew coming in and congregating in Cowan by the hairtail weekend, it's important that the hairtail boys get hold of or make up wire rigs of sufficient breaking strain to handle a good size jew without the worry of losing the fish, given the fact that many will be concentrating on hairtail using live yellowtail and an assortment of good bait with an each way chance of a jew. My half a dozen are really excited about attending the Hairtail Social, and talking to them yesterday and this morning boy oh boy you can say that again! Cheers jewgaffer
