brother of tang Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 (edited) Hi all, I have just bought a new reel for lake/esturie fishing, it's a shimano sedona 2500fb. I have it spooled with 4lb rapala braid and 10lb mono backing. I'm just wondering because this stuff is so thin and light is there any problem having a running sinker on it above a swivel like on a conventional bottom rig? And how important is it not to let it rub against anything, like a rock in the water infront of you when fishing LB? Sorry if these are stupid Q's but I've never used this stuff before. P.S. Any other advice anyone would like to give is much appreciated Thanks in advance for any replies. Edited June 28, 2008 by hookenup
shefford Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 I am relativly new to braid as well, but when i run that setup bare in mind im bottom bashing, the sinker sinks faster and then the bait/rig will wrap around the braid, nasty bloody knots happen. Switched to mono/bm leaders. No more hassles
brother of tang Posted June 28, 2008 Author Posted June 28, 2008 I am relativly new to braid as well, but when i run that setup bare in mind im bottom bashing, the sinker sinks faster and then the bait/rig will wrap around the braid, nasty bloody knots happen. Switched to mono/bm leaders. No more hassles I had a quick go this morning just to try the new reel for 1st time and i was using a 9lb mono leader with a small ball sinker above the swivel on the braid main line and i was getting the leader tangled around the braid basicly every cast. When i use that rig with all mono i don't get the tangles. I then tried flicking a SP around, still with the swivel and 9lb mono leader but no sinker and didn't get the tangles??? Will go in the boat next time and see what happens, I was fishing LB today and had a strong current running across me so the rig was rolling around on the bottom a fair bit, that wouldn't have helped. When you say mono/bm leaders, what does the bm stand for? Thanks for the reply
shefford Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Black magic fluro leader material. Um... You can spool like 4-6 metres of mono ontop of your braid for your leader, and then use your swivel that way, will still have braid sensitivity because braid is running through your guides/rod. Im not too sure how much leader you could effectively have while fishing estuary/rivers, out on the reefs i run a 6 meter mono leader and can still feel every single tingle!
brother of tang Posted June 28, 2008 Author Posted June 28, 2008 thanks for the tips mate, I'll experiment and more than likely ask more Q's here and see how i go.
GregL Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 are you throwing up current first? Maybe if you throw on a 90 degree angle to current max, it shouldn't let the leader roll back on it self as it's moving in the current. This way it's always moving away from you and there shouldn't be any slack in the line to cause tangles. Greg

I don't normally fish LB, just wanted to have a quick go with the new reel this morning because i only bought it y'day. Will see how i go next time i get out in the boat. Thanks mate.
Flightmanager Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Personally , I would lose the swivel. Just join the fluoro leader to the main line with a uni to uni knot , then either a jighead on the end , or a small running sinker straight to the hook . # 1 son and I use this rig , and we never have tangle troubles .
