jewgaffer Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 (edited) I'm a beginner at beach fishing and im looking to buy some good beach fishing gear .... im going to be doing alot of beach & rock fishing while i learn so can anyone offer me advise on a good setup i can buy? Advise on rod, reel, line, even hooks for pillies most welcome. I'm located in Sydney. Hi Geek fisherman if I was starting out today I would buy a 12' Snyder Rod fast action medium/heavy with an already in stock set up at the butt for an alvey plus a perfectly matched 650 Alvey star drag reel. The line I'd use would be good quality low diameter 40lb monofilament. For a general rig I'd probably use 4/0 - 5/0 heavy duty hooks snelled with 60lb leader threaded thru some protective tubing with the hooks tied over that. Hope this helps, not only as a starting point, but at having an opportunity to buy good fishing gear at a sensible price that you can use for life and from there you can always go on to the more lightweight specialist combinations as you progress along, but remember you'll always have that good backbone behind you with the Snyder and the Alvey to start off with and in my opinion when beach or rockfishing it should always be kept up front. bluefin Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 (edited) Jewgafer is spot on, except he has a one track mind. JEW. Bream Whiting Flathead ect are my targets off the beach. So i use 18 lb line and no trace and Beachworms. If Salmon and tailer are on the menu, I use a 40 lb trace and ganged hooks with a pilchard. 650c5 Alvey and a snyderglas mt7144 L However my wife uses a 6kg Wilson Live Fibre rod and a Shimano 4500 Baitrunner, 14 lb fireline with a 20 lb trace. This is a beautiful outfit!!!!!! Howard. Edited June 28, 2008 by bluefin

I've been doing some research on gear, and i've got a few questions. which alvery model(s) are the '650 star drag', i went to their website and found a large range of 650! how much should each of these components cost? any recommendations where i can buy in sydney? Thanks for the tips! Gold!
jewgaffer Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Jewgafer is spot on, except he has a one track mind. JEW. Howard. AND seeing colour!! i've got a few questions. which alvery model(s) are the '650 star drag', any recommendations where i can buy in sydney? As Howard, Bluefin said it's the 650c. The star drag is star shaped and adjustable under the handle arm and much easier to work than the dome shaped first finger and thumb drag adjuster which may be an older model I think, but I'm not sure.I also like the general fishing gear mentioned by Howard and particularly the wilson rod and baitrunner 4500 as used by Howards wife as a second rod, you cannot go wrong there. The 4500 is a very smooth reel for the price and not a bad reel if a school jew happens to come along all the same. As to price this is ALL good quality specialist fishing gear and at a bargain price in my opinion. As to were to buy it, it's stock take time and quick phone call to Go Fish Pete or Tony Fishfinder would be simply the best way to go and you can see what a good deal you'll get with their special prices for members, and again that is exactly what I'd do. Hope this helps Cheers and for your good factual input for this member new to beach and rock gear Howard, a big thumbs up! jewgaffer By the way I have not usen gang hooks for years, I just snell hooks together short using protective tubing over the leader and tie on over that. Those gang hook tend to loosen one another on head shakers and quite often on wire for larger toothy fish, where I reckon you're better off with a single.
bluefin Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Snelling takes Me hours. Salmon are great at jumping and throwing hooks, this is My answer ! Howard.
