Tuross Annual Holidays

After 3 weeks without shoes, it was tough putting them on this morning and coming to work.

The holiday was brilliant, but the fishing slow. We caught a feed of flathead most days, and I lost 2 good flathead after having 100mm shads swallowed whole. One fish was 70cm easy. Didn't see the other one.

Took a mate out who caught his first ever "legal" fish, a snapper of 32cm in the lake. Saw lots of quality whiting caught as well.

Most effective lure was the Squidgy shad in black and green, or in black opal.

I had one amazing piece of luck. I put my new outfit down next to me while I put some sunscreen on. I have never done this before, I always put it in a rod holder. Naturally, it disappeared over the side in about 12 feet of water. :ranting2: A sickening feeling. Fortunately my mate hooked it on his second attempt, and the rod & reel were retrieved, and the 55cm flathead caught as well :badair:

Funniest capture - we were drifting at a great rate of knots due to a strong breeze, my little bloke hooks up and after some boat work, lands a flower pot - not the fishy kind, but a plastic terra cotta coloured 8 inch pot, home to a sizeable octopus. The occy was upside down, and had latched on to a piece of beer bottle glass, and and old oyster shell - neither of which it would let go of.

Now tell, did you turn the occy inside out & bite its brains off as a show of bravado to your youngin' :1prop:

Not this time Darryl. I much prefer the taste of sashimi squid to occy :1prop:

Not bad going, you get your new outfit back plus a 55cm flathead. Hope you stopped at the newsagent on the way back and bought a few scratches.

Where is Tuross????

G'day Martin,

No Scratchies, but Powerball was a waste of money. I reckon I used up enough luck in that 5 minutes to last me a year.

Tuross is a fantastic lake / river estuary system on the south coast of NSW between Batemans Bay and Narooma. There are a bunch of lakes down that way. It was declared a rec only zone, and I have noticed recently the quality of the catches has increased, but as I said, this year the quantity was down. Most normal species can be caught, flathead, bream, bass in the river, whiting, jewies etc etc. We have been going about 10 years.

There are 2 caravan parks, the lakeside where we stay, and the beach. On the other side of the road on the way in is Coila Lake, which is renowned for it's prawns. As Homer would say mmmmmmm prawwwwns. :biggrin2: It is a magic area, not too heavily populated even in peak tourist time. The only downside is that the bar at Tuross is way too dangerous. Most people will go out of Moruya, or a number of other pretty close ramps to get outside.

But unfortunately, now I have told you about it, I will have to kill you :1prop:

Cheers

Ken
