G'day Gary,

Around $200 will get you into something worth fishing with but without you paying for perfomance you don't need.

I'd suggest a 9wt for what you're planning. A 10 will throw bigger flys & has a little more stopping power but I really notice the extra strain after a day casting with a 10wt... my 9wt outfit is surprisingly 'lighter' to use. I often use a 7wt Loomis GLX on Salmon but it's like trying to stop an elephant with a noodle on a decent king.

Think about getting a 3 or 4 piece so you can keep it in a locker or bag ready to pull out when you get tired of using your conventional gear.

I'd also suggest you get an intermediate (very slow sinking) line to start with as the most versatile. You can let it sink and fish deeper or even fish poppers if you strip it back in fast enough.

Look for a reel with a large arbour (large inside diamater spool). You'll be able to get line back on the reel heaps faster which is really good when fish start running at you like salmon do a lot.

Last but not least don't be fooled into thinking you need 300m of backing. 100m will do fine and if you fish 6-10kg tippets you'll rarely see the backing on harbour fish. Different story if you start chasing tuna or something though!

Cheers, Slinky

brickman,

i bought one last year. 6/7wieght, 9ft rod, i paid 130 i think from memory. i used it once last year and a few times this year but it got me into the whole fly fishing bug (even though im yet to catch a fish on fly and cant cast for shit)

mine is a two piece but i recently bought a four piece 4wieght for trouting and now wish my 9ft one was three or four piece too.

good luck its fun
