Hi raiders,

SlinkyMalinky and I managed to get out for a fish on Sunday having had work, family and weather conspire against us over the last couple of months and what a day we had out there!

Saturday evening we touched base and finalised the arrangements for Sunday. Plan was to meet up at 7am and head to the shelf, troll down to Browns for a cube and then make the run back to Broken Bay in time for dinner. Of course neither of us intended on actually getting down there at 7 and when I rocked up at 6.30 it made me smile to see Tony jump out of the car where he had been waiting for a few minutes. SO it seemed we were both as keen as hell to get out there !!

We were past Barrenjoey and into an unexpectedly gusty N-NW and sloppy sea also coming from the North. Not sure what happened to the 1.5m southerly swell that was forecast other than it must have been beneath the slop. Anyway after battling over the Shelf we set a spread about 15k’s north of Browns and went to work. Shortly after the Bibless Minnow in short gets nailed and takes a run, after some nifty boatwork by Slink to avoid the props we have my first fin boatside! Slink drives in the gaff - first YFT for the boat and first for me – not one of the bigger models but enough to put a smile on my dial for the rest of the day!

We reset the spread and continued on towards Browns and past Browns looking for a patch of warmer water that was visible on the SST’s on Sat but we couldn’t find it so a U turn and back to Browns to set a cube trail.

After a couple of hours of cubing out tuna bottle lots its top and with it we lost our defense against the bloody birds! There were no birds in the trail while the oil was out but as soon as it was gone a couple of scavengers turned up to devour every cube that hit the water. Despite trying to trick, scare, bribe, threaten and distract them out cube trail was pretty much wiped out.

Slink made the call to head in to LongReef and flick some soft plastics in the fading light for a chance of a Snapper or two. And what a great call it was! Arriving at Longreef we were greeted by Sammy the Seal as he sunned himself. I honestly did not believe full grown seals were around off Sydney’s northen beaches – but here he is!

First drift over a promising looking wall and I am on. Slink called it for a snapper early and th headshakes soon confirmed the likelihood that we were onto a nice red. The heart quickens when a deep red fish with iridescent blue spots and big bright blue eyebrows surfaces. After a dodgy shot with the little gaff due to a blunt tip (#^%&$%# will be grinding this on the weekend!) Slink lip hooks the fish and into the boat. A PB snapper on a soft plastic – we were very happy to say the least!!

You can see the teeth marks in the 3/8 jighead where the jig was ‘snappered!’. (Great photo Slink!!)

After some shots with the sun setting in the background we set out on the cruise back up the coast and back in to Akuna Bay where we had departed a good 12 hours earlier!

Slink is great company and a very knowledgeable fisherman with a great sense of humour! There was an awesome vibe on the boat right from the start thanks for an awesome day Slink!!!!

Cheers,

Andy

Great reading the report Andy. Thanks for a fantastic day on the water... I love it when a plan comes together. I've got a new secret weapon that arrived in the form of a PM to solve the problem of the b@#@$ birds (thanks Penguin).

Your Boston Whaler is an awesome boat and those Verados on the back are almost frightening. If I ever traded in Mrs Slinky it wouldn't be for another woman... it would be for a boat just like that! The fishing was just as memorable getting to be part of a couple of firsts.

Andy Loops is a great bloke to fish with, knows his boat really well and is a great skipper. Lots of good chat as well as good fishing.

I loved the fact we had the snapper ground pretty much to ourselves. Funny how a lot of people pull the pin and disappear just when prime time & tide kick in. Not that I'm complaining.

Hey Browney... sorry you missed the trip but how did you do up north?

Cheers, Slinky

What a good effort  I knew Slinky and you would sought it all out and get onto the yellowfin. The good result came from your own keeness, experiences and study with help from the Fishraider boys and you went out there, put it all together and did it all very well.

Well done on the snapper at Long Reef. The angry head shaking part had me on high beam for second !

Cheers

Great report guys

I Love that "snappered"

So Slinkey do I detect you are becoming a Whaler convert ???

( May the AU$ get stronger and stronger )

My missus knows that her only competition is a rig like that...
