Guest Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 The weather had conspired against us for weeks and with the poor showing of tuna at the moment,Ross Hunter asked if we would like to fish down at Stanwell Park for the day. We had no hesitation and met at the wharf for a 6am start. The weather looked great as well and it was always going to be a great day on Broadbill with the ever faithful deckie "EMU" and Captain Ross Hunter. Captain Ross Hunter Emu,faithful deckhand The crew was myself Gerry,Lyn and Geoff Dalucius,Lala and Aaron. The morning was superb with whales everywhere and smooth ,windless seas. The scenery in this part of the coast is amazing and worth the trip alone. Whilst admiring the beaut scenery Aaron hooks a fiesty little salmon which was released after a quick pic. We arrived at the "HUMP" off Stanwell Park and commenced a nice little burley trail to try and entice a few reds on floaters but the current was raging from the north so we opted to use the good ole paternoster rig and get to the bottom quicker. All manner of fish came aboard including some nice pan sized reds and a decent mowie, some pigfish and butchers and a few leatherjackets to make a pretty good feed for the crew. Micheal (Lala) hooked a pretty good fish and it was fighting like a good snapper and to our amazement it was the bigggest Port Jackson shark I had ever seen and he repeated this once more on another big porty. The day was a pearler with top company and a hell of a lot of laughs. Rossco sang us a few tunes in the warm afternoon sun and we were all contented with our efforts. There was a very funny incident on the way home Aaron asked Ross if he could be dropped off at Yarra Bay on the way home as he didnt live far from there and his missus was going to pick him up. Now Broady draws a fair bit of water and Ross said I will get you as close asI can to the beach and you will have to swim for it Aaron gets all his gear into a plastic bag and Broady backs into the beach and the command was given to go for it. Well Aaron does a forward sommersault off the back of Broady and lands with a degree of difficulty of 6. We pass him his bag and goodies and he swims off towards the beach freezing his balls off. Here are the pics to prove it. It was a great day and I cant thank everyone enough for making my day just that much more enjoyable. Cheers Stewy
the1murph Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 hey stewy sweet mixed bag.... looks like a good day! Jack
arpie Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 OMG!! Sounds like Fr had another successful outing with Capt Ross & Co! Looks a terrific day on the water. Fun all round with lots of fish caught. Well done, guys Roberta
Steve07 Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Good report & photo's,its a shame the current ran too hard to target the bigger snapper on floater's. Still a pretty good catch of fish for the crew on broadbill & its always a great part of the coastline to travel along by boat from Botany Bay to Stanwell Park, awesome scenery along the way. Arron, ive done that swim to the beach a few times off my boat, but not usually this time of year. Mate i could have come around the loop at lapa & picked you up in the bus if you called me!! cheers Steve
Dalucius Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 (edited) Great report Stewy. We had a successful day on the water with good company. Our thanks to Stewy for organising the day and to Ross and 'Emu' who did a great job looking after us. Classic departure by Aaron! We're can't wait for our next outing. Just remembered two more sightings we had - a seal and fairy penguins. What a great coastline to fish. Edited July 8, 2008 by Dalucius

Lala, especially for your most kind remarks, you may wonder wether we appreciatte it and I assure you it makes our day to hear your comments. It is the thrill for us guys to see someone catch a personal best fish . When youv'e been a fisherman all your life and caught pretty much all their is to catch over 50 years of fishing, sometimes it is easy not to appreciatte the more simple things of the wonderful world of fishing as seen through an individuals eyes. You caught the biggest fish the other day of your career and that should be special. Well done I thouroghly enjoyed your company..Thanks again and I will look forward to your company another day on Broady, maybe a yellowfin next time. Roscoe

Guest billyd Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Thanks, we went out with Ross yetserday but the weather was horrible, he was good enough to turn around and credit our trip for another time!!! Not many captains that would do that once you have already steamed a few miles off the coast... Thanks Ross, cant wait to get on board soon!

Not many captains that would do that once you have already steamed a few miles off the coast... Thanks Ross, cant wait to get on board soon! I was one the phone with Ross when you guys turned back, which was a very good idea and there will be heaps of better opportunities when this weather settles. Good skippers always make the right decisions for the crew,we were supposed to go wide for tuna but as the bite had slowed ,Ross gave us the option of snapper fishing and it turned out to be a great day for all involved. As Ross said" Why would you want to sit out in the wide blue yonder watching Emu throwing pilchard cubes in the water all day when you can all get onto a few nice fish and enjoy yourselves" Now thats what I'm talkin about
Guest billyd Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Ha, yeah fair enough, i guess from our point of view we both have boats and often fish longy and the likes for the same fish, didnt really want to spend our cash doing what we can do ourselves for a fraction of the cost. the thought of emu freezing while throwing pillies into the deep blue would have been money better spent from our point of view. We'll be back when the tuna are on the bite!
johnsparky77 Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Good pics and looks like a good day out cheers sparky77
