Jake Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Worth eating? Doesn't seem to be a short supply of them and they seem quite meaty, like a flathead.
forliano Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Worth eating? Doesn't seem to be a short supply of them and they seem quite meaty, like a flathead. Hey mate, I have heard many people say that they are great eating... Personally I have never tried, not something I go out of my way to catch, however like I said, I have heard that they are great to eat, maybe give the next one a go on the BBQ... Anyone else heard they are good or tried them before? Cheers Ben
flatty hunter626 Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 always seeing pplz filleting them at the boat ramp and hav been told they are really nice....constantly catching them at juno:( so might keep one for a feed next time and see wat they are like.
Davemmm Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 A lot of effort for not much of a return. We tried one years ago after catching a multitude of them in the Shoalhaven. Once you clean them, skin them and cut out cartlidge etc you are left with a couple of clean white "fillets". They taste nice but for the size of them there is very little meat. I couldnt bring myself to killing one again just for a small feed. Dave

Dave Im with you on that one Dave,i have caught a couple of big one's around the 7 to 8 kg mark which gives you some nice, clean & white fillets that are very tasty if you cut them up in pieces, dip them in beer batter & deep fry.But they are usually pretty hard work to fillet, clean & skin them for not much meat in return for all your trouble.I also just let them go back,as there are plenty of other fish to target in the estuary like flathead, whiting, bream, trevally & kingies to take home for a good feed. cheers Steve
