hi guys,

had a job to do in the city first thing today so made some burly and got down there early to get an hour or so of blackfish action.. i went to one of my spots i cut my teeth on many moons ago and even though alots changed its still very fishable.. got the first drift happening just before 7am and didnt take long to suss it out.by about 7.15 i got a very strange down so let it play out abit the set the hooks, yes hooks..i use a 2 hook rig and its been a long time since i had a double but today the day.i didnt see it as 2 for a minute or 2 and i was getting tested big time then they went wide in open and planed up to surface :1yikes: 2 blackies and both around 40cm.. unfortunately the ran back for cover with me continuing walking in other direction then under all the pressure i had to apply the top hook pulls :ranting2: no time to worry as other one goes deep into the kelp then bugger top hooks snagged and me watching for what seems forever this blackies thrashing amongst the kelp then my leader parts.well that sure got the adrenaline pumping,no mucking around now rig new leader and hooks and back into it.over the next half hour i get plenty of downs and land 4 blackies 38-40cm and lost as many. my lunch cooler bag would only fit the first 2 so let the others go and was really playing with em in the end.left them on the chew at 8am to get to work a very happy and pumped man as one of the ones i kept was in roe :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo: ..

that my raider friends means its time for all you guys that want to try catching these bronzed beasts to get out there and have a go as the next 6 to 8 weeks they will be alot easier to catch..

get to any wharf/rockwalls etc with kelp/weed beds and your in with a shot..if your at a wharf at first light good chance if you look under they will be schooled up... burly will keep them interested and in the strike zone also....

anyway heres the 2 i kept and just had one tonight filleted in a herb corflake crumbs yummo...

Nice way to start the day Steve.

I've had one brief session off the rocks and nothing in the boat for the last three weeks. Damn freezer is almost empty. That will be rectified as I now have a full week off work and will be hunting blackies the whole time.

I put the muffs on the motor and tried to start it with my busted hand. Nearly fell overboard onto the garage floor. :1prop: But i've got it sorted now so blacky week here I come.

dave i would be hitting the harbours now as ive seen some big schools starting to get around very recently..

the weed i had was fairly old and they were smashing it,just wish i could of stayed there longer to enjoy it..

sure was a nice way to start the day......

hope you can get around without too many dramas with your little handicap there....

wish i had a week off while there in full swing...

somehow i dont think your freezer will stay empty for too long :biggrin2:

Terrific action there, Steve!! Always exciting when you get 2 big ones on a double rig! :1yikes: They only ever go one way ..... in opposite directions to each other! Very tricky trying to net them when on the breakwall!! :(

We've had a few roed up here, but am mainly still catching the boys just now. Haven't tried the breakwall for ages - got a yakking buddy staying with me just now & more arriving today, so have been in the lake! :)

That big one looks bigger than 40cm!! Did you see Sails 45cm one??? :1yikes: on beachworm!!!

Get intae um .....as the scots would say!!!

Cheerio

hi byron,it feels like an army hear at times with the 3 boys keeping us busy and fish doesnt last long here thats for sure.. hope your hands are on the mend so you can get back into it full time again....

hi Roberta, the smaller female was a shy under 38 and the bigger male just over 40 but was much fatter and well conditioned, gave me a real test but luckily i was up to the task at hand.

this is not first time lately just first with roe and a double :yahoo: ....

jenno64 go gettum mate nows the time... let us know if you need help in any way...

for all those that want more info heres a bit of food for thought

for the harbour go around any piers etc and along the walls with great kelp beds like luna park wharf along the wall, kirribilly,Cremorne Point great with parkland,Mosman,McMahons Point, the zoo,cliftons/balmorral,pyrmont wharves, rose bay, watsons, vaucluse point, gee id be here all night listing them all, most of the wharf areas have good kelp beds but need to check on shoreline accessibility ,this is the structure to look for..beware lots of wharves are no fishing now but can be fished from shoreline...i use 10lb mono with 10-12ft rod pencil style float weighted as close to neutral boyancy as cond allow.lighter traceline of 4lb to 6lb. a size 10 hook and mostly 2 hook rig... find bottom (float wont settle and lay on side) then come up a little so just off bottom...keep changing depths and drifts untill you find where they are feeding..they will be schooling up under structure and in weed beds.you will also see them rolling around so to speak in the weed beds. burly will bring them on or keep them in target zone...

hope this helps guys... cheers...steve....
