:1welcomeani: aboard the good ship fishraider mate..

there is plenty of great fishing along your coastal area...

if your a bit more specific in what you want to target you might get some more detailed advise..

if you want to go fishing the stones(rockfishing) please take care and dont go alone as tooo many people lose there life fishing.there are alot of good people here and im sure someone from around your area may show you some spots and how to fish safely...

now if you want to fish the beaches then any of those local beaches are good, try in the corners with fresh or live bait or if you can find a gutter fish that.. usually a 2hr session to high works well but other times may produce dep on spot...your main prob here is the surfers...

hope this helps...

cheers...steve....

sorry about the rant on safety but the chopper at the park across from my house is an ever too frequent visitor from accidents on the rocks...

Hi roosterman,

Thanks for the great advise, I have only just picked up fishing, and I was at Malabar beach fishing off the rocks in the late afternoon till dusk. Using prawns as the bait, only 1 decent size catch which was a leather jacket, the rest of the were undersize bream, snapper and parrotfish.

Just wondering when is the best time to go fishing.

Hi K Wong :1welcomeani: to Fishraider

While you can catch good size flathead at Yarra Bay at low tide, the top of the tide down works best in the drop offs just out from the shallow "wader's water" off the little beach between the restaurant and the Sailing Club at Yarra Bay. You'll find local fly and lure fishermen down there who fish for flathead regularly. Just watch them for a while and find a suitable spot and use Whitebait and Salted Pilchards for bait.

There is a flat rock protrusion on the nearby point on your left where you can drive your car right up the platform close to where you fish. This area has deeper water and can fish surprisingly well at night. You would need to get hold of a nicely balanced twelve foot spinning rod to clear the rocks when retreiving a decent size fish, and the benefit of that is that you could use the same rod with a well matched reel for your Eastern Suburbs beach fishing as well.

You can get advice on locations and a Fishraider member's discount on suitable tackle and bait etc from one of our sponsors, Fishfinder Bait and Tackle, who have a well stocked up shop in Bunnarong Road Matraville which is only about 10 minutes away from Kingsford where you live and on the way to your best fishing spot/s.

Hope this helps get you started off close to home in the Eastern Suburbs. Then you could fish the start of the flat rocks at South Maroubra at the corner near the beach where th rocks meet the sand. Also there are the wrecks of two old ships in Long Bay, one ship is around the bay corner near the eastern point and the other one further down into the bay on the same side.

When you call in to Fishfinder Bait and Tackle for your bait etc, you might be able to get the approximate location and advice for landbased casting between the shore and vicinity of the wreck that's well into the bay, as Tony from Fishfinder also runs a fishing charter boat service out of that area.

Cheers

Hi K. Wong,

I also live in kingsford and do some landbased fishing more for squid. But i'd be more than happy to show you some quality fishing spots. PM me and we'll arrange something.
