wazza13974 Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 just wandering if anyone knows if the upgrade has been completed cheers warren
pelican Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Wasn't yesterday Not actually sure it has started apart from some plastic barrier and a short period of shovel leaning or maybe they just clean up very well after a days work and my mate who walks he dog down there doesn't notice. They have a serious engineering problem there with unconsolidated silt ( not even soft mud) going very deep there and no soliid base. After doing the ramp they proposed dredging the channel from memory so they would want to get the ramp right and corectly supported as many industrial size plant gets loaded there on barges for the waterfront constructions. There has been issues there in that bay from runnoff and then since the sewerage tunnel works years ago and I think they will struggle to find a easy solution hence the 12 month delay so far.

pelican Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 (edited) Nah what I meant was that they started it 18 months ago when they got the grant and again 12 months ago with a second round of grants.. The whole process has been a problem as they have had some engineering and budget issues with the repair / upgrade. Nothing like winching after a day out!!!! From what I was told they were going to tie the prefab ramp extensions together with RSJ on either side and slide them down the ramp and tie it into a couple of piles below water. Their test pile drive was stopped when they had driven (well actually just dropped) a 40 foot pile and it self drove itself over 40 feet into never never land silt. A longer one did the same. I won't say how much bluemetal went in but it didn't even make a difference but the harbour probably rose an inch or 2. The engineers don't know what holds the current ramp where it is ( but believe that many tons of bluemetal must help stabilise it and stop undermining - just guessing ) or that the blumetal after 12 months may have stabilised the area ( ha ha as if) so are playing a very careful game on any renovation. I don't think they really want to know as if it isn't broken they are better off know knowing or there would be no budget big enough and they would never get any $ from Syd water sewer project which possibly caused some of the issues. pelican Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 (edited) Tunks ramp looks like it's finished and back in use as of this morning. They have not used the prefab concrete pieces and instead have used concrete poured in a geotex envelope by the look of it. Ramp looks 40 plus foot long and they have kept a fair bit of the same gradient with a slight flat spot where the extension starts. Bring on the new double pontoon and dredging. Piss'n'Broke Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Its almost done!!! Launched here this morning, its a massie improvement upon what it was!!!!! Will love the see the end result of the upgrade, especially when I noticed the waterways construction guys had there automatic level setup on the pootoon the week before last when they first started the upgrade Dan
