shefford Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 After studying the bar and asking locals how to cross it we were told not to cross it on a run out tide. needless to say we crossed it on the peak run out tide and it was bloody hair raising, close waves together barely had time to get the nose of boat up to hit the cap of the next wave, but after the first 100 metres we flew out @ 30knots to 9mile (8kms out to sea), was 10-15knot winds, swell rose and was around 1.5 metres, got choppy and had hard time producing bites even though the sounder was going nuts. Got my first ever 2 leather jackets in NSW! never got one in qld before. Needless to say i now know how they got their name, got a few smaller squire and a very large moses perch (45cm) and a few bits of fish here and there on the closer bombies near cook island, had a close call with a wave off fidos. Had a bit of a crack on the bait grounds but to no avail. Hard day to produce fish especially since its the first time testing some gps marks and working our way on the new areas. But very enjoyable, say about 8 whales in close proximity, 3 pods of 50+ dolphins in each pack and a few turtles. AND A FLYING FISH, turned to the side of the boat to see this flying about 1 metre from me and it turned around and flew with the wind, couldn't stop laughing, first time i've ever seen one HOW DO YOU COOK LEATHERJACKETS?! or are they only good for crab bait.
james1990 Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Hard day out off the coast...whales dolphines and turtles and a flying fish.....would have been great to see. suttonscurse Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 To prepare the leatherjackets , cut off their heads and gut them , then grab hold of a piece of the leathery skin and peel it off back towards the tail(do both sides). Lightly dust them in flour and then gently fry them until they just start to turn golden brown (don't overcook). Very nice fish to eat with succulent flesh.
slinkymalinky Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 (edited) G'day Iricangi, Swordfisherman will know for sure but I think those are Trigger Fish not Leather Jackets. Cheers, Slinky Edited July 11, 2008 by slinkymalinky

Re eating triggerfish, Swainston's Sea fishes of Southern Australia does not rate them as edible, Guide to the Fishes by Grant says they are not considered a table fish, and the CAMTAS chart of fish of the Coral Sea rates most of the triggerfish as poisonous. Best feed them to the cat first (if you dont like the cat). They are considerd a good aquariam fish but its a bit late for that.
Ads Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Hi, Great report! Im pretty sure they are trigger fish................not sure if you can eat them or not. Ads
