bobfish Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 Hey Miller, Boiling the head should do the trick. At the ten kg mark the jewels will be around the size of an almond...
flatty hunter626 Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 my first ever jewie was about 4 kg and we managed to get the jewl out just by cutting into the heap
luderick59 Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 hi miller here is a photo of some of the jewels fish size range from 10lb to pb fish of 64lb use a hacksaw blade top of spine behind the head its oval shaped they [2] are inside floating in liquid hope this helps peter
Hodgey Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 That's an incredible collection Peter I knew an old gentleman in Brisbane many years ago who used to make intricate jewellery from them. They are highly sought after as trophies in jewfishing circles up there. Great photo mate. Hodgey
Rhino2099 Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I found them the first time I tried (must have got lucky) If you turn the head upside down so the gills facing up you then need to find the bottom of the skull an inch or two behind where the eyes line up and break through the splintery cartilage and dig around a bit and they should pop out of their fluid sack. Worked for me Ryan
Bushmeat Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 thanks has anyone got a pic ? I googled Jewfish jewels (to find out what they actually are) and found this may help. Toward the bottom of the page has a pic. http://www.users.bigpond.com/murrell/fish/
