Lbg Fishing

Hello there fishraider :biggrin2:

I have recently found out about LBG fishing and I’m very interested in giving it a go.

So would there be anyone that can give me a bit of knowledge about this exciting method of fishing.

What I would like to know is firstly what equipment do I need for LBG? I have a 12-20kg, 2.1 meters 1 piece rod at home with a spinning 7000 Odyssey reel (50 pound braided line). I’m guessing I need to change the line to prevent it from getting cut off in the rocks.

What hooks and sinkers etc do I need?

For bait I have been told that live bait is the best to use, what other bait is suitable?

I have also been told that fishing in the Tubes JB is an awesome place for LBG, but yesterday I got told by someone else that the tubes have been closed for a year now due to people littering. If the tubes are closed for LBG, what other locations do you guys recommend?

Thank you in advanced for all your answers and hopefully when I give it a go I get luckier then my attempts in beach fishing and Hawkesbury river fishing.

From an enthusiastic learning fisherman :1fishing1:

hey roosterman the tubes was over rated yes the storys are true but this is not an every weekend event

the currant has to be pushing strong from the north to enter the bay and ideal codition are few and far between.with google earth this can now be some what easyer to predict

there are many lbgf spots in sydney if thats were your based

hear are a few i used to fish in order off prefferance

1 the joey point[fishable up to 1.5meters[free standing rock around the frount off point with rod holes fishable in up to 2 meter swell from the south]

2the ovens [south whale] rod holes and rock pool for liveys bugger to get to 1.5 meter swell max

3;north head left off blue fish point good spot in a southerly rod holes and livey pools

hey rickb i'll put it in bush terms for you

bit like tying a live carp to a willow branch with 100 lb line for a big cod[set line they called it up the hunter]

but with lbgf you sit there and wait :biggrin2:

Have heard good things about the Joey, but with the current state of affairs of the hawkesbury, I wonder if alot of it still applies?

Further to roosterman80 (aka DPM) 's :biggrin2: Questions...

I have some questions on techniques for catching Live Bait off the rocks to begin with?

I don't imagine any other baits would be effective except perhaps spinning metals and large plastics as you would for tailor and Bonnies?

Gary, do you simply burley up, small hooks, sabikis or small fishy bits as you would when getting livies in a bay off the boat?

I also hear heading up a bit further north to chase longtail tuna when in season is as good as it gets for NSW LBG...

Might need to head up for a weekender soon! :1fishing1: AJ

i think were getting off topic

rick marlin are the ultimate goal but a bit off a dream off the rocks although it does happen and there are people that target marlin

as for live bait off the rocks there are yakkas at most spots and the usual method can be used for catching bait

we used to start at the joey before dawn casting big gar on gang hooks[6 0 4 to 5 hooks]with a star light about i foot up from the hooks, nothing like seeing big green back tailor hit a gar being slowly retreved

a few in a rock pool and it was king time with live tailor, this is were lbg fishing starts

out goes the livey and the wait begins and goes on and on and on

you never know what will hit a live bait of good size so you wait and wait

we had some good days but a mainly remember the waiting

Hi Garry,

thanks for clearing all that up.When I first saw the initials I never dreamt it would be game fishing

I know what you mean about tailor and garfish,we use to fish for them off the top of kurnell when I was home on leave.R.A.N. we use to hook up grapel lines to slide down and grab the tailor that way we did not lose any on the way up.

thanks again for setting me straight.

cheers Rick.

Hello again

It sounds like a lot of patience is required for LBG…but I can only imagine the great feeling you get when that nice big Kingie or Marlin get’s caught!

Thanks for those spots you recommended Brickman, Ill try and get magazines or books that give me tips in fishing on those locations.

When I catch one…Ill post the pic and you will be the first person I thank. :biggrin2:

LBG looks pretty dangerous too so I imagine is should take the same precautions as rock fishing?

AJ I think we are going to have to take a trip to the Toy store something soon man!!!

Thanks again guys for your help

Roosterman are you prepared to go out time after time, filling up swimming pools of water, catching live bait, upgrading your tackle to something more along the lines of a GAME reel (TLD50 with 24kg line, TLD 30 and 15kg line or north coast style light game reel with 10kg line) walking with 20+kg of gear on your back through the bush.

then waiting

then waiting

then hooking up fighting a fish for 30mins of complete back breaking hell and adrnalin to lose it at the gaff?

Then a couple of times a season, if you put in the serious time, effort and back breaking work maybe just maybe taking a few BIG fish home? Well if you are then check your p.m.

to the left of blue fish point is a good spot in the warmer months there's a nice ledge even with cover just be careful in a north/north easta i fish just off the point for kings and i see rock fisho's casting sp's just past the wash into a bread burley and catch and some good kings you have to climb down the cliffs the ropes are set into the rocks i see them take a quick photo and throw them back or fillet the kings straight away and pack them into their backpacks and climb back up the rocks

hope this helps warren

my mate has caught a few marlin and YFT LBG fishing down the south coast. He takes a blow up pool to keep the livies in. I think he fishes around JB and also some other spots down a bit further. He doesn't get the YFT in the numbers the boats going wide have been getting them in the last few months but he does get them. His 1st marlin was from somewhere around JB and was around the 100kg mark, he kept that 1 and had a fibreglass mould made of it and has since released a few more.
