Gear Ratios

i was looking at some reels and i saw that some gear ratios where diffrent to others

1st gear ratio

eg 5:1

i now what this this one means for every one turn of the handle the spool turns 5 times

2nd gear ratio

eg 3:5:1 or somthing like that

and i dont know what this one means

is on better than the other or are the for different pourposes

Hi fisherboy, are you sure it wasn't 3.5:1, meaning 3 1/2 : 1. Same as the 5:1 but spool turns only 3 1/2 times for every rotation of the handle? I've never seen 3:5:1
