Guest Jocool
Dropped the boat in at Parsley Bay at a liesurely 5:30 Am this morning. Motored over to West Head and bagged a few Livies, and then proceeded to see if we could convert them to some decent fish! On board was my brother Sam, and cousin Simon, who both assured me they would be OK after getting only about 2 hours sleep. Started of just inside of the Joey and dropped down a variety of baits. Fresh squid, Pillies, live Yakkas and strip squid were all on the menu. First cab of the rank was my brother with a decent 60 cm Flatty that now resides in our fridge. He backed up nicely with a 35 cm flounder that took a liking to a pillie tail. Onre of the 4 KG rods I had down, was loaded with ganged hooks and a pillie. This took of like a shot a few minutes after the other 2 fish! End result was a 37cm FAT breambo that is keeping the flatty company. That was it for the Joey. It shut down pretty early. Moved over to Box Head where Simon was looking decidedly green. And seeing I had run out of berley, he kindly obliged. That put paid to any ideas I may have had for sneaking outside, as the morning was beautiful! Did a drift across the front of Box, and had a huge run on the Livie...then slack line....Livie was gone and I muffed the strike. Another one went over and was accompanied by Sam's butterflied yakka. No sooner had it hit the water, it was hit! Again I missed the strike. Pulled it in and noticed it was slashed along the flank. While I was contemplating what did the damage, Sam's butterfly went of! A couple of screaming runs, and he set the hook. All this on his 10lb rod! He passed me the rod as he wasn't too sure on how to handle it, and I obliged like the good brother I am! 15 minutes of give and take between me and the fish, finally saw us boating a shark of about a meter length. I'm not too sure what type of shark it is, but I'm sure you guys will let me know. Seeing that Simon was looking like a green ghost, I thought it was time to get him out of the chop and wind, which had built u considerably. Went back in and heade for the ramp, but we were waylaid by some surface activity. Seeing Simon had never caught anything on a lure I let him play with some smallish tailor on Raider slices. And he was looking a lot healthier. Amongst all the tailor we actually nailed a couple of bream on the slices. Simon actually got one of about 35-37 cm to the boat but dropped it. Anyone else ever taken a bream on a slice? I thought it rather strange! Last fish of the day was an unknown that took a liking to Simon's slice and proceeded to take it home...In a cave! Should have seen teh look on his face. Priceless. All in all was an OK day with a feed and Simon getting a buzz with the lures!

Narralakes
Great report Joe, as always. Looks like a few fish meals coming up over the next week, well done on the fish and some big bream. Do you reckon the big runs were kings or jews? I know how your brother feels, I felt a bit green when outside last week, no fun, but when the action starts it seems to disappear quick. Rick T
Well done Jo, the bream on slices sound very interesting . Any sign of kings at the moment? Narra the missed runs would almost have definately been bronzies. once they pick out the baits in the area they will circle the boat waiting for the next one to go down. They sure do give a good tussle though and are great fun to get to the boat.
Guest Jocool
You eat the bronzie? 31548 As luck would have it, the whole tribe is coming over for a late lunch today! Looks like battered Shark Steaks are on the menu. Rick...Yea very interesting with the bream on a chromie. I never seen that before, but I have heard of it happening. No signs of Kings. No one was pulling any, and I did a scout around for bust ups and didnt spot any. Ken...Like Rick says I think most of the other striikes at Box, would have been sharks. But I did get a good hit near the Joey. I normally stick the hook in a livie about half way down to near the tail. I got one hit and brought the livie up...minnus its head... So I would assume that particular strike was a king as they tend to hit the head!
The Iceman
Its not unusual to get bream and reasonable reddies on small slices if you let them drop under the tailor schools I would rather get them than the tailor unless the tailor are big
Narralakes
Thanks Rick and Joe, Iv'e never caught bronze whalers or any shark b4, Iv'e seen plenty surfing the north and south coasts though. Biggest fish for me so far is that gem fish last week and a big salmon from the Port. Are they targetable at all with the fly? Would be a hoot on my new 10 wt which I am taking out to Pittwater in a week or two targetting kings and some salmon.

When you going out there Ken? Maybe I will be there too.
Ken A
A tip with eating sharks Joe If you have the time to do it freezing it & thawing it out makes it nicer to eat. It breaks down the coarsness of the flesh.

Guest Jocool
The shark went down a treat! Everyone loved it. Cut it into steaks, and smothered in Beer Batter with a twist. (I like changing recipes ) Everyone loved it, but I prefered the Sweet Chilli calamari I did as well! I actually did a couple of slivers of the shark in the Calamari sauce and I thought it tasted better. Chips and salad on the side, and a couple of Coldies to wash it down! MMMMM...Meal fit for kings! Just as an aside, I thought I would try something different. You all know what great shape I'm in... So to help it along........ Deep fried Mars bars of course! Kids loved em....but my gran looked at me rather funny! Thanks for the tip Ken. Will keep it in mind. And the other Ken....Maybe I will be there and we can meet up. Guest bluecod
Joecool, Glad to hear the Bronzie ate well - a few year ago a mate and I decided to keep one each, I just bled mine by cutting through its throat, whilst he decapitated his to bleed it - well the one I kept tasted of iodine and the one he kept tasted great. So I now I figure to get the most out of them they've got to be bled properly.
Martin
Great report Joe and a nice flathead. Your report made me feel like some fish and chips. Guest Jocool
Hope to run into you and say Hi one day. 31670 We will cross paths...and you will probably rue the day you made this statement! BTW Joe, was it difficult to clean? Iain, the way I did it was I cut it inot cutlets, then trimmed the skin from the outside of each cutlet. I have been told you need to skin it, but I just couldn't work out how to do it. I have since learnt that some people cut it in half down the spine, then half again. Then just run the blade under the flesh with the fillet sittingskin side down. Apparently that works a treat too! I hope I explained it right.
