the_lure
The Weekend started off with me working shift so asleep on the lounge Saturday Afternoon, when I got a call from Matt's phone, it was Luke, more than a little dazed i went back to sleep again, then woke up thingink I had dreamt the call and the talk of Jew and Salmon fishing on the Shoalhaven... I called Matt a few minutes later, after having packed my bags, just in case Matt was down at Luke’s place in Nowra and I was on my way, the plan to target some Jews in the morning and if the Salmon where about then go play with them for a while. A nice dinner of Prawns, Luke’s sensational special Oysters (secret ingredients need to remain secret) and some Kilpatrick oysters, The Matt and Luke Kilpatrick oyster cook-off was in full swing, with some tasty outcomes!! On to the main and a nice steak, mushrooms and salad then pretty much off to bed by 10pm for an early start. 4:50am and we where up a getting ready for a Jew. A short drive to the ramp at Greenwell point saw us on the water and ready for action, still dark we applied ourselves to the task of getting a few Jews on plastics.... it was not to be. Near the end of our Jew drift the surface started to boil around us with Salmon hitting baitfish, Luke was first on with a 100mm squidgy flickbait; meanwhile Matt and I started rigging up 6" Sluggos on worm hooks. The Action was hot to say the least, with the Salmon hitting almost everything we threw, metals, flick baits and sluggos off the surface! At one stage all four of us (Matt, Dee, Luke and Myself) where all hooked up to Salmon, a feat in itself on a 4.75m Quintrex! Only 3 fish where landed, with my leader being sliced by the fireline on Luke’s Rod, almost inevitable with 4 people hooked up to some fiery Salmon and running around the boat!! The acrobatics on the hooked Salmon was awesome to watch, even more remarkable was a fish that wasn't hooked getting airborne and basically swimming on it's tail. I managed to scare the hell out of Luke when a following fish smashed the water trying to get my lure about 3 feet from the boat! Some other amazing sites where dolphins everywhere and a small tailor fleeing from something below only to be nailed by a waiting bird. A really top morning, with over 20 Salmon caught between us, the biggest going about 2.5kg caught by Dee on a 20gm Raider. kikila
Good to see the salmon in such good numbers in the Shoalhaven. I used to fish there very regularly years ago out of my 12 foot tinny and I used to get stacks of tailor where you got the salmon but I never got any salmon. I think that shows that the salmon stocks are really on the improve since the pros have stopped targeting them. Hope you have many happy days catching Shoalhaven salmon. Didn't encounter any tailor at all, save for seeing one getting chased by something then eaten by a waiting bird cheers Chris
