Ray R
Hi Raiders, just went in to my local super big shopping centre and had a quick scan of the seafood prices at the fishmongers shop and the Flathead fillets skinned and boned were $34.95 a kilo, think the only fillets we'll be eating are the ones I catch, makes those flattie catches of late quite valueable.. Cheers...
arpie
Better come up here for some - only $20/kg ...... plus petrol!!! We only eat fish that I have caught! I find that in the supermarkets, you can usually smell it before you see it ...... I wouldn't even buy their mullet for bait! yep - keep those flatties coming!!! robeebee
too true and when people buy a whole fish, the thing still has it's guts and gills the fish must be at least a day old and hasn't been gutted , gotta taste not so good
Jewhunter
Makes a few packets of plastics look cheap! As most of us know, you could never buy fish fresher than the ones we catch ourselves. You've been getting plenty of late Ray. Keep up the good work! Cheers, Grant.
Davemmm
$34 is alright when you compare them to $41 that I saw a few weeks ago. What makes it worse is that the flatties sold in a fisho are all from outside. These fish don't even come close to a good estuary lizard. You beat me to it, Grant Even at the price I pay for a packet of Gulp ($11.95), it's still cheaper and fresher than the store's offering. It's $36 a kg in some places down here, and can be up to $42 for 'flathead tails' The way you are slaying 'em at the moment, Ray, they won't be getting any money off you any time soon Hodgey
Day's Fishin
Same sort of price in Windsor.Gives me plenty of ammo why I should be out fishin instead of fixing the yard. Jeff

I wonder what the regulations are in regards to our flathead specialists putting a bag of flathead in swap and sell Cheers jewgaffer
Davemmm
you can keep the duskies. give me offshore flatties over your estuary mud suckers any day. CFD Ahhh Chris an inside dusky beats an outside dusky hands down. If you are raving about sandys then you are deadset right. Sand flathead are beautiful and are mainly caught outside although they come in to the front part of estuary's from time to time. From what I understand though the majority of fish caught by the pros are duskys from outside the heads. These fish are generally alot smaller than duskys in the rivers and in my opinion taste crapier. But if you can get a haul of Sandy's offshaore then you are doing real well Dave

I used to put the taste difference from the duskys we caught in the Georges down to the outside trawler duskys dying slowly in the nets until I got the chance to compare outside duskys and southern blue water duskys caught inside in places like Lakes Entrance and Mallacoota with the tasty trawler caught Georges river fish that going on colour had obviously had spent most of their lives in the river and they were far more moist compared to dry bluewater duskys and had a noticably sweeter taste. Perhaps Hodgey could comment on the taste difference between his entrance duskys and his darker upriver fish. Cheers jewgaffer
slinkymalinky
Keep an eye on your eskies boys & girls. Could end up having people bust rip you off leaving the rods, reels and sounders behind, but scarpering with the lizards. Psssst... wanna buy a Flathead... fell off the back of a truck... no, really. Cheers, Slinky

tuffy
Yep guys, $39.95 per kilo at Rhodes on Saturday, and I've gotta tell ya, the size of the fillets were about 5 inches long, so how big were these fish when caught. The only saving grace about the shopping trip was that there was free beer tasting, so by the time the cook got back from Ikea she had to drive home !! yahoo!!
