adkel53
G'day Raiders After coming home from a week at Tuross that yielded only three keeper lizards I was keen to get back on home waters to restore some confidence!! Headed out early in my mate Wayne's 4.5 m Horizon side console. Met another friend, Greg, who is into game fishing in a big way but had never caught a lizard on a lure, at the ramp. Began our session at about 6.30 with the tide trickling in and a stiff breeze blowing against it. I set Greg up with my favourite spin outfit with a trusty Black Gold 70 mm squidgy fish attached to a 3/8 oz jig head. Not more that 5 minutes in and Greg says "I think I'm on - not sure though". Suddenly there is a big splash as an angry lizard that we estimated at around 60 cm is thrashing around on the surface. The inevitable happened and the hook pulled. Soon after a smaller fish hit the same lure. Alas, it self-released too! Not long afterwards Greg managed to stay attached to a 45 cm fish and in it came. By now he was on a high as he couldn't believe that fish would eat those little bits of rubber. Neither of we two more experienced plastic tossers had detected a touch by this stage. The tide began to pick up and the wind subsided so that we had perfect conditions for the rest of the morning. We kept drifting through the same area and managed to land 11 fish all between 45 and 50 cm between us. Four more all around 40 cm were released to grow bigger. We lost a number of better quality fish, including one of at least 70 cm very close to the boat. For some reason they were biting very shyly today and we couldn't manage to get solid hookups. We moved on, even though we knew there were fish still around, to show Greg some other places and caught 1 more similar sized lizard before returning as the tide neared its peak. The action had slowed (with the slowing of the tide I think) and only 1 more smaller fish was hooked and released. The most successful lure today was a lava coloured squidgy lobby. That one accounted for about half of the keepers, the rest falling to the ever reliable sqidgy fish. Then end result was four keepers each, a big game fisherman revelling in throwing sps for lizards (he also has a smaller boat and is off to but some plastics!!). three fishos having a lot of fun and my confidence restored!! Day's Fishin
Lizards seem to be caught everywhere lately,is it because theirs more of them around or is it because more anglers have fond the secret of using alternitive baits? Jeff
jewgaffer
Lizards seem to be caught everywhere lately,is it because theirs more of them around ........? Jeff There seems to be heaps of duskys everywhere up to 50cms Jeff. The good signs are that the large specimums usually join in not long after the smaller size schools come in. Small duskys around twelve inches long (30cms) are still mature enough to be able to intermingle and spawn. This year seems to have all the makings for good fishing in general in the Sydney area Cheers jewgaffer
Steve07
Great day out on the flatties for you guys & top fun on plastics too, with some nice fish amongst them as well. cheers Steve
Hodgey
Well done Kel. After doing it so tough down here, it's good to see you getting onto a few back home. Water temp down here is STILL hovering around 16 degrees, but the flatties are starting to investigate poppers now, so we should see the fishing improve soon. Gulp, Atomic and numerous others have been modifying and 'improving' their line of plastics continuously, yet the humble Squidgys have remained relatively unchanged, and still they catch their fair share of fish.
