humesy
G'day, Thought I'd file a report to counter the notion that Middle Harbour is teeming with kings, as was my assumption before heading out on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons (with the mrs. being away). Saturday at about five, anchored up over known Kingfish locale and began with the burley. Managed to raise hordes of tasty yakkas and pilchards and had the decks cleared ready for the big strike. Didn't happen. Tried spot B (known kingie and jewie locale) for low tide and deployed livies. Manged to raise 2 nice squid and had all lines in. Was at the ready again for nothing. Darkness came and headed off to spot C, known jewie spot, for the run in. Had butterflied tailor, live yakka, live squid and dead squid. No prize for guessing; no result. Tried spot D for late run-in/top of the tide. long story short-nuthin. Sunday, picked up mate and headed to saturday's live bait spot for nothing. NE wind died and thunderclouds started gathering. it felt like prime conditions. Tried another spot for nothing but a nice squid. Back to spot B from saturday with live and dead squid and a bait jig ready for livies. Couldn't raise them for the life of me though. Managed a pan sized trevor for sashimi but we sat in what felt like prime conditions, having to content ourselves with chewing the fat as opposed to fighting fish (no complaints, it was a cracker of an evening). Finally a rod buckles and I hand the rod to my mate who is new to the game. Its no king but I'm excited as hell, hoping to see a jewie surface. Result; bloody PJ. (damn i'm sick of those things). Kingies must be around but they are doing a good job, avoiding my lines for the time being. Got the thinking cap on as to why, would welcome any opinions. Getting up early might be an option but I'm doing that 6 days a week already for work and not being a morning person and all... well I'll give it some thought. Also giving thought to a downrigger to be able to cover more ground but this involves a few technical challenges. My boat is only 4.2m and I don't want to clutter things up too much. Interested as to why the yakkas and pilchards were thick on saturday and totally scarce on Sunday. Cheers Edited October 20, 2008 by humesy
slinkymalinky
G'day Humesy, The problem is a really obvious one... you spent too much time as Spots A,B, C & D. You should have gone straight to Spot X Next time mate... persistence always pays off eventually. Just wasn't your turn. Cheers, Slinky

Mate...If you're trying to console me, your not doing much of a job there. Would have been more than happy with 3 kings. Were you downrigging and what time of the day if you don't mind me asking. miller
humsay i hate to be the bearer of bad news but early morning seem to be the go at the moment yakkas have to be small under 10cm and squid are always the goods hope that helps cheers miller
humesy
Don't you start Mr. Miller, you and your fine looking kings. Just jokes boys, all in fun. Thanks for the tips. I was doing alright in the evenings in autumn. The kings would come on the chew in the last hour of light and then it would be time to set the jewie baits. Might just have to set the alarm for my day of rest. The trouble is the absolute sh*tfight that comes with boating on a sunny sunday. Bring on the next school holidays I say. They're never more than 10 weeks away as I like to tell myself. Edited October 20, 2008 by humesy
jim77
Humesy... I can sympathise with you on 2 fronts. I went out yesterday and was feeling really confident. Had one of my best squiding sessions ever (got 8 within 1 hour!) and a tank full of Yakkas but couldn;t buy a Kingy! I downrigged lots of places i know have been holding fish and also anchored up at a few spots but nothing other than pickers spoiling my nice squid. As a consolation i did catch one of the biggest Salmon i have ever seen (75cms! ) but no kingies!! I am also a teacher and that was the first time i have been out on a Sunday for a long time. It was choas! The holidays have always seemed good but now they seem even better. Only 7 weeks to go until the next one... better luck next time.
