abiasin
Hi Guys, A mate and i are heading out to the hawkey, in particular broken bay in search of some small hammerheads and other tooth buggers. any tips on primo locations? i was thinking of flint and steel and juno as a few mates have scored a few there in the past. any advice or infor would be greatly appreciated. For anyone concerned for our well being, thankyou in advance but we know what we are getting into just not too familiar with the territiory around the hawkey for sharks and where to maximise our chances. Cheers, Adrian. Edited October 23, 2008 by Kingies till i die

slinkymalinky
G'day Adrian, West Reef is a primo spot. I used to fish there in my old boat from about now thru to the end of December and catch them regularly. I believe it's a breeding area for them. Berley heavily with oily fish... usually plenty of big yakkas and often Slimeys (by far the better option) available while out there, then run a mix of live and dead baits out under balloons. Often I'd see them well before a bait was taken, working up near the surface well behind the boat, obviously tracking the berley and baits. Pretty awesome sight The hammers seem very cautious compared to other species of sharks and most of the dozen or so I've caught there were on baits set at least 30-40m behind the boat... and another surprise, on mono leaders. I've never caught a hammer on wire and had them always pick up the bait on mono while ignoring the ones on wire... can't say why. Only ever got bitten off once. Mostly used 130lb Black Magic hard trace. Biggest I caught there was about 70kg... got some 'in-water' photos as I released all of them, but I can't get at my home computer or I'd post them... everything's packed Great fun on 6-10kg gear. Cheers, Slinky

Cheers, Adrian. The rules for recreational fishing for shark species were changed recently. The combined daily bag limit for all species is five, with a limit of one per day for tiger, mako, blue, hammerhead and whaler shark species. A zero bag limit applies to wobbegong.
