leonardroy
Hi All, Went Bass fishing yesterday for my first time , and managed to catch my first Bass, which measured 33cm. Did not keep it for eating, even though i have never tasted Bass, as i caught it at Menangle and am not sure that it would be safe to eat from there. What are your thoughts, is it safe to eat fish from there? Also i would appreciate suggestions of other places i might try around the Macathur area. Enjoy your fishing, Len. Enjoy your fishing, Len. good on ya len and congatulations on catching your first bass! I cut my teeth on bass as a kid growing up on the hawkesbury at north richmond. Fishing for them can become adictive, they really get the heart pumping when they smash that lure!! Not sure of any spots around your way, but if you have a boat the nepean gorge is probably worth a go. As for wheather they are safe to eat from where your catching them - sorry cant help there either. I release any that I catch usually anyway. Hope you get a bigun soon. tight lines. T'n'K. ARP1980
Well done on your first bass. Not a bad size for your first one either. I have caught quite a few bass up that way and have never even contemplated eating one. EVERYONE I have spoken to who fishes there says you will likely get some sort of desease from eating them there. Also, the bass have to travel over up to 10 weirs to get to Menangle from Penrith after spawning, so their numbers are only replenished during times of flood as some of the weirs (including Menangle) don't have fish ladders. I did notice however that they have recently put a bag limit sign up there? A bit confusing when right next to the bag limit sign there is another sign saying "No swimming" and that "water quality in the river may cause infection" and "Swim at your own risk". Only one way to find out I suppose. If I was ever to keep a Bass I would probably keep one closer to where the fresh water meets the salt ....wherever that is??? Cheers, ARP1980

Hi T'n'k, You're right about how they smash the lure. It sort of caught me napping, as i wasn't expecting much to happen at 3.00pm. I was there just to have a look at the spot, but thought i may as well throw a line in while there. Everything was so quiet and peaseful, and then BANG, and away this guy went . They are a powerful fish. Thanks for your reply mate, Len.

I intend to release any Bass that i catch but am curious to know what they tast like, so one day when i find that spot where the salt meets the fresh, i will give it a try. Cheers, Len. Cheers Luke Hi Pal, Hey that 40cm Bass would give you something, judging by the fight of my little guy. Tell me where you caught him mate, if you released it he has probably grown some, and maybe i can pick him up, or perhaps his big brother. Cheers, Len. Unfortunately it was the only Bass i have ever eaten and regret taking it like you would not believe. I still kick myself to this day, and have vowed to never take another. (I dont like the taste of Bass and if i did i still wouldnt keep them) Cheers Luke
