Hi everyone,

Just wondering if it's possible to buy bait (squid) for kings? Fresh whole Hawkesbury squid from the fish markets? Or is that still not going to be fresh enough.

I've also heard that some of the fishing shops sell squid as bait that has been vacuum sealed by the pro's who have caught them. Wondering if that would be a possibility.

Thanks guys,

Bo

Hey mate,

you wont beat the live ones for a solid king hookup. Buy a squid jig or two and learn how to guse them. That will be a much more rewarding investment of your time and money...

hi Bo,

I only ever use frozen squid and have never had too much trouble catching a kingy.

the trick is to make sure that the squid has been looked after and was in pristine condition before it was frozen. if it looks pink - dont buy it! make sure it is nice and white almost transparent and you souldnt have any problems. If you can buy it fresh even better.

t'n'k.

Bo, you hear of people catching kings on peeled prawns so i recon if your in the right place at the right time they will have a go at almost anything!

Heh Bo, best kingy bait is alive because of the ink, however the fish markets do sell squid, fresh is always better than frozen it doesn't matter how well it was frozen.

G'day Bo,

Yes, you'll catch kings using frozen squid... Sometimes. You'll get more with fresh squid. And you'll get a HEAP more most of the time with fresh squid or live bait. There's a reason that 9/10 reports about kings on Fishraider start with a short report about where they caught their bait.

Take along some good store bought squid as a fall back by all means... but put in the effort to get fresh bait and it will pay off

Mate Slinky is right on the money...

You dont need Live squid to catch a kingy, but if you wanna catch multiple kingys per trip, Nearly every trip and not just underize rats you gotta learn how to catch squid and not look for a easier option.

If you chat to all the regurlar kingy catchers on this site, people like Robbielites, Va911, Namesay they all use live squid and live squid only......

A few people over the years have asked me about how to catch kings and i respond the same to all of them, Catching kings isnt hard, compared to other species they are simple to catch, but with kings bait is very important, and in our harbour squid is by far the gun bait, so i tell people to master catching squid, because if you master that, you will master kingy catching.
