pelican
I always get a receipt with words to the affect that the seller agrees he is the current owner and the boat and all fittings are unencumbered and free from all finance. Description of boat and all engine numbers and trailer rego. Doesn't stop a company claiming it is theirs but may give you some recourse against a seller if they have any assets. Check with Maratime as they were getting a bit particular about the wording on receipts and dates etc which you have to show them when initially registering the boat. If it had previously been boatcoded and registered they will see who is the last registered holder and if it doesn't line up with your receipt may ask for a stat dec. Take a copy or write down the sellers driv lic number and details and chech address actually matches where boat is or rego papers. Have a close look at wher ethe manufacturers plates are and where the boatcode plates are and ensure that they don't seem to be tampered with or missing. You don't want to own a rebirth. The boatcode guys put them in particular spots. Revs check as above ( not sure is it now a national database for boats or do you have to check it is not stolen from another state) Honest sellers won't be too fussed about any of the above

Flightmanager
Make sure that on the purchase receipt it states clearly : PAID IN FULL. There sure should be no great drama re-registering your boat , it only took me about 15 mins at my local Maritime Office. Boat Code plates are placed in 2 spots on the boat , one usually near the transom , and the other "strategically" placed in a not so visible spot. Check that BOTH numbers are identical. Dreamtime
Check against the trailer registration and serial number also. You could ask to see both the owners car and boat licence to verify that the same name is on the boat and trailer rego - not much help regarding emcumbrances but at least if all names are the same it should give piece of mind. How about asking the seller for his original Bill of Sale (receipt) from when he purchased the vesel. A few ideas that may help.
