Pleasure Point On The Georges River Thursday 6/11/08

Hi Everyone.

I met up with an old friend of mine George (Cungee George on Fishraider) at Pleasure Point on the Georges for a landbased session and we fished from 5pm yesterday afternoon till midnight.

Pleasure Point is a pretty place and a well named spot but doesn't have much in the way of an obvious fish holding area about it. There are long runs of muddy areas generally, a shortage of general vegetation and weed beds and no oyster rocks or likely blackfish holding areas whatsoever in sight which highlight an area's availability of natural food.

There are a few moored boats towards the end of the narrow reserve where it could prove reasonable to fish for bream at certain times and a small cleaner sand section just on the left hand side of the jetty is likely to hold worms and that sandy area could attract whiting in the run in tide and possibly bream. Still it's not a sand flat area or a spot that you would consider to be a stand out spot if fishing for those species.

There are only a couple of mangrove trees along the whole frontage of Pleasure Point that could be a chance for flathead as there were quite a few mullet jumping around merrily but there were none schooled up near the jetty.

The fishing area has a rounded point, hardly the type of point that's worth having a second look at. The area is snag free and there are only a few isolated sandstone rocks in the water along the waters edge and they are plain and have no signs of vegation.

I believe small jewfish have been caught up there recently. That section of the Georges River is quite narrow and the absence of channel markers shows open areas for boating and the picnic ground area could suit long distance beach rod casters but it appears the fishing would be for fossicking, travelling jewfish. When you weigh it all up and the lack of structure and vegetation, the Pleasure Point section of the Georges looks more of a thoroughfare for schools of fish going elsewhere.

We used a variety of baits and wedged seven rod holders between the low level retaining wall and the grass between the jetty and the moored boats, used squid mllet and yellowtail fillets for bait and just sat back and chatted and monitored the chem lights on the rod tips.

With a well balanced 7ft rod you can almost cast to the centre of the river where it valleys away to more depth in front of the houses on the opposite side.

We only got a couple of undersize bream but luckily managed to catch a 320mm bream on a new Pflueger light weight rod and a Daiwa reel after I decided to jig a yellowtail strip up and down occasionally to make sure that the bait attracted some sort of attention and that in itself might encourage more use of soft plastics, but as I do with hardbodies on flathead, I'll leave that until the fish become active on bait.

George lives near the water in the Menai area and has fished the Georges for years and next session we'll boat fish in the Lugarno area and I reckon we'll be more at home and more successfull in that part of the river.

Cheers

I have a pic in my new mobile I would appreciate if I could send it by sms to someone to post up for me as photos are always better than words.

Fabulous report as usual Byron. Your description of a 'fish thoroughfare' is quite apt and would encompass a lot of areas down here as well. Still, a fishing sojourn spent with a good mate, regardless of productivity, is l a great day on the water.

The jewies had better look out once you have your back surgery mate, 'cos I reckon you'll be back with a BANG!

Always an informative read mate. Have a great weekend on the water, and please pass on my regards to Shirl

Cheers

Good on ya Byron I am sure it would have been a fun night down there with George to talk to

Knowing how much George likes his seafood I hope the wasnt a fight over the bream at the end of the night :biggrin2:

Now the water temp is upto that 20 degree mark I am sure there will be plenty more in the weeks ahead

see you soon
