pelican Posted November 8, 2008 Posted November 8, 2008 (edited) What sort of Kayak do you have, How high is your car and how far are you transporting it. I find that many of the racks make you lift an already hard to handle 20kg object a further 20cm higher and that is hard work on your back after a paddle. Have seen a gas assisted one that dropped down the side of the 4wd but nearly died when the lady told me the price but as she said when they have the caravan on they can't walk and slide it on the Cruiser over the back. Any price is worth it if it means you don't injur yor back. For longer sea kayaks there are a few where people hav the tow bar ( bike style attachment) that supports the yak while driving but has a pin to telescope the shaft downwards to assist in sliding it on from the back for unloading and loading. I travel only short distances so resorted to extra closed cell foam on racks and soft tiedown so I don't have to crush the yak to hold it on. Interesting to hear what solution other have Edited November 10, 2008 by pelican
