braddles Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 (edited) Hey guys, Went down to my local spot yesterday , first time squidding and ended up with 3 nice arrows around 25cm Since it was low tide when i left it was very good to go fishing at my jewie spot.... 1 .Whats the best way to freeze the squid so i can use it next time? 2. Is it better than the market squid? Even tho im freezing mine for a while? 3. I put them in ziplock bags (airtight) and in the freezer full of ink?? correct? 4. Should i kill the squid straight away after i catch them? 5. Also when baiting for jewies should i have the ink over the squid strip or not? 6. How long can I store my squid that i caught yesterday until they loose potency of catching kings/Jews. 7. I just chekd my squid and its gone a little pink? what does this mean? thanks, Brad Edited November 8, 2008 by braddles
robeebee Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 the only time i've caught a squid , by accident by the way I put it straight out live and caught a Kingy
rippinlips Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 hi Mate, if i have any left after a days fishing they come out of the livie tank and straight into snap lock bags. seal the bag tight by submerging in water (below opening) to get rid of all air. hopr this make sense,. Cheers
andrew399 Posted November 8, 2008 Posted November 8, 2008 dont kill them, just whack them straight into zip lock bags and squeeze all the air out. The biggest thing is to ensure that NO FRESHWATER toches them. This is what makes them go pink. Yes they should be covered in ink when you use them for bait. Iwould think that if your ones started to go pink then the seal might not have been done up properly and some freezerburn got to it. It is still definately better than wha tyou get at the markets but if its gone abit pink it has lost its appeal as a king bait, but is still good for jews.
chocofallon Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Also I wrap my zip lock bags of squid in a few sheets of news paper to try to avoid freezer burn. I can't remember who told me that but I have down that and the squid keep their colour really well.
jewgaffer Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Hi Braddles. If your squid is on the pinkish side, it's a good idea to take the skin off with your thumb nail. By doing that the bait will be white and without any camoflague, and the flesh will leech out more scent. You can also keep left over ink in a jar and pour ink into the top of the tube of a squid bait so that it will leak out gradually and attract fish to your bait. Little improvements to bait presentation can really count when presenting a dead bait. Cheers jewgaffer
