tide'n'knots Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 Hi raiders, I fished wisemans ferry this morning from 6am to 10am and caught bucket loads of undersize jew between 35-40cm (lost count how many) 3 flathead 2x40cm and 1 50cm model. I moved 3 times to try and get away from the small jew in the hope of catching some larger fish and everywhere i went there were hoards of them. I suppose its a good sign that the river is healthy but what a pain in the butt! I went through 2 packets of hawkesbury prawns and nearly every prawn was a fish! - you do the maths! As I was pulling the anchor to go home 2 guys stopped in another boat for a quick chat and said that they had caght 9 good flathead at the windsock! (for those who know the river). looks like i might have to fish there this weekend - might even try some sp's. I'll have to try some of roberta's silver fox plastics, she seems to be doing well at the moment with them. Tight lines. pete.
robeebee Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 hope all those little ones grow up to be meter long plus
marcel haber Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 Well done Pete for getting amongst them once again mate. At least the bites are making for entertaining session. The bigger ones are awaiting you just around the corner mate, never give in. These fish will give you great practice for when the bigger ones come on the chew. Twin 1 Marcel.
arpie Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Hi Pete Shame the biggies didn't want to come out to play, but at least you were catching consistently, even if they were bait pinchers!! Well done on the flatties, tho - nice table size! If you find some broken down structure or oyster leases, toss the Silver Fox's around there & don't be afraid to use a bigger jig head on the 80-100mm range...... it really gets the paddle tail 'going like the clappers'! Big lures = big fish! I am sure that is what attracts the flatties to my rig ..... plus the fact that they hang around the leases because the mullet are in there too ..... and the Silver Fox's look like poddy mullet (well, a bit!) Good luck on the weekend!!! Give Cam a bell!! Roberta
sails Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Hi Pete, well done once again on showing us how healthy that river is. Must be a bit of a disapointment to be in the kindy and not the high school though!! I look forward to reading about the big one you catch next time. Cheers Cam
flatty hunter626 Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 im starting to think of those dam undersized jews in the same way as catties and eels atm as theres just so many of them!....i managed a few just over legal at around 50cm lately and i have seen some much bigger fish come in which proves they are around!.

I fished the brooklyn end of the river on saturday night and managed 1 about 5lb but they are very few and far between further upstream! I think I may have to concentrate my efforts closer to the mouth if want decent jew, having said that, there are some good flathead at the moment right throughout the system - again there were some thumpers caught last weekend. pete. The guys I was talking to caught the 9 flatties where we saw those guys jigging for herring so I figure if I drift through that area casting soft plastics ahead of the boat it should work OK. I actually let the 2x40cm fish go that I caught and just kept 1 to eat, cant see the point of taking them just for the sake of it and i still have some fish uneaten in the freezer! pete.
arpie Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Good on you Pete - I've been putting all my fish back recently! Am going out this morning! Sun is shining, high tide in the lake at lunchtime, so I will head out mid-late morning & test my new SX40s!! If I have any left, I hope to try them next week at Glenbawn (if the weather allows us to go there! ) Good luck for this weekend! Hey - any day on the water is good! Roberta
